He also would have likely transferred to Wake or maybe gone to Dayton when Ollie left if we hadn't hired Jeff Capel. Also of note, ODU was after both Petey Sessoms and Ace Custis the year prior. VT was going after both as well. Once Petey chose ODU (over VT no less), Ace decide to go to VT since they were similar players (Ace was good too). Crazy to think that with just a few minor things, Odell and Petey both would have been Hokies, and Ace Custis would have been a Monarch. Purnell was a great recruiter. Sessoms, Hodge, Jones, Mullen, Leonard (he may have been Young), what a squad. And speaking of Tic Price, I recall a lot of folks wanted him to come back and be the Monarchs coach, but I think he got into some kind of trouble.

I'm assuming that Oliver was also involved in the recruiting of Mark West at ODU based on a conversation that we had. I chatted for several minutes with Oliver on the sideline of a summer league game back in the 90's and the subject of Mark West came up while we were talking. Oliver told me that the moment he saw Mark play he knew that he was the guy they wanted to play center at Old Dominion. UVA under Terry Holland was also recruiting Mark out of high school.

Back in the 80s we had #7 recruit Anthony Tucker all but locked up. Then John Thompson stepped in at the last moment and scooped him up. Lasted one or two years and transferred to Wake.

I vividly remember all of those details as well. I attended a meeting at ODU with Tom Young during that time and he spoke of an unnamed recruit that they were in with that would be very high profile. It was Anthony Tucker. If memory serves me here, I'm pretty sure that I remember Tom having to step out to take an important phone call related to recruiting (probably about Anthony) during that meeting. The meeting was for the Monarch Maniacs - or whatever the group was called at the time (I forget).

Does anyone remember the name of that club that was at ODU back in the 80's? For some reason Monarch Maniacs just doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure there was a $25 or so annual fee for the membership.

That is true and I don’t mean to downplay it too much but his radar included something like 30 schools.

According to Verbal Commitments, we got a 2024 commit from a Deion Ware, a 6-5 SG from Killeen, Texas. Supposedly committed April 18. Says he plays like Jenkins. Hope it's true.

I noticed Matthew Hodge running with the PSA Cardinals in the EYBL. He had a good game vs. Boo Williams yesterday with 6-6 (3-3 from 3) and 15 points.

I don’t mean to jinx anything but we offered Arden Begaj, a 7’0 F/C, class of 2024. he plays in Canada and Vasean Allette knows him. Dude would be a solid get, good shooter, can stretch the floor, 4.0 gpa.

Sounds like he was very impressed with Princeton.
