Sure....they have it every year; the fourth day of this month. It's just not a holiday over there.

In the summer of 2000, when I was studying at the University of London, I went to the movies and saw Mel Gibson's "The Patriot". But it was called "The Avenger" in England. There weren't a lot of people at the show, and I seemed to enjoy it more than they did.

My Brit friends usually send me texts/e-mails around the 4th. Some are congratulatory, some not.

It's my first movie we watch on the 4th. 04-cheers04-cheers

The closest thing they have to it is Guy Fawkes day. He was a pro Catholic who wanted to kill James the First and attempted to blow up Parliament with gunpowder. November 5th is the celebration.

The masks you saw on the movie V for Vendetta were Guy Fawkes masks. It's a Brit thing and leads to fireworks displays which is about all it really has in common with the 4th of July.

The Patriot is an excellent film. A great period piece loosely based on the exploits of Frances Marion, The Swamp Fox from Berkeley County, SC.

I would also recommend:

Drums along The Mohawk with Henry Fonda
Revolution with Al Pacino
The Crossing with Jeff Daniels
Sons of Liberty - Mini Series ( 3 episodes)

I also like these about the French and Indian war and the War of 1812

Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis
The War of 1812 - 2 hour documentary

Any of these will get you in the 4th of July spirit.

The Buccaneer with Yul Brynner and Charleton Heston is a good one for the War of 1812. You will even recognize Lorne Greene in an uncharacteristic role as sort of a villain.

"The Patriot" is one of my favorites.

Gabriel broke a cardinal rule of combat. Never try to stab a guy when you can shoot him.

At least he got to knock the bottom out of Anne once before she got incinerated... and he got gored by Tavington.

I get a "bloody colonist" text every year from a friend. He's a US citizen now but still likes to poke fun every now and again.

Don't forget to display your AMERICAN flag for the fourth. I capitalized it because the Prideful Sinners will think it's a good idea to place their rainbow one over the American flag.

I liked it: Prideful Sinners. It fits. You can use it if you like. 03-wink
