Potential home for D1 wrestling. Also says with the transition to D1, Tarleton raised the athletic budget to 7.8 million.
There is something very odd about this new program. Basically we are starting club wrestling with the “potential” of D1.
There’s a reason the big schools in the state haven’t done this. 5 million to start a program is nothing for the likes of UT, or A&M.
I love the idea, I just don’t think this will ever get off the ground here. Or that the University/System is even on board. Publicly, they have been luke warm at best. When Hurley is fired up about something, the whole Tarleton community hears about it.

Recommendation for women’s wrestling to become an NCAA sport. Currently the women are club only. This should help Tarleton with the number of scholarships for women and men.

In a Twitter/X Q&A with Grant Leeth today, I asked him why the university has put nothing out in regards to the two wrestling programs. He gave an answer. In private conversations later, I asked him if I could post his response and he said yes.

So here is his response

“Due to their transition to Division-1 (their transition started in 2020 and will be over this spring semester). They also won’t officially launch wrestling to varsity status until we hit our fundraising goal. Fantastic question. Hoping to have an announcement about our initiative this summer.”

Giggle. What does that even mean? I was so on board for wrestling, but show me the baby. Until the University promotes this, it’s just another club team like lacrosse and rugby.

As of today, women's wrestling isn’t an NCAA sponsored sport, but it is on schedule to be NCAA in 26. HC Leeth stated on X the university didn’t want the announcement to disrupt the four year transition program. He also said an announcement will be forthcoming this summer after the transition ends.

My speculation is with the women’s side not being an NCAA sport, it might appear on paper we would be in violation of Title IX with too many men’s scholarships. Bureaucracies can be extremely short on common sense so this could be an unnecessary issue within the transition process. Transition ends in a couple of months so then make the announcement. Again, this is just speculation on my part.

Tarleton and Hurley have way bigger fish to fry than starting wrestling.
I’ve been a huge Hurley supporter but what’s happened with the Nursing School is pretty dang unacceptable! Going from one the best to one of the worst in 3-4 years, and garnering lots of really bad National attention is an ugly black eye. Especially with the announcements of new PHD’s in a couple of medical areas and bragging about the new PA certification. Pretty sure wrestling is way down the list. As if it ever even was on the list. Which it wasn’t!
