Of the more than $10 billion-dollar total budget, the state’s four public research universities, UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Augusta receive over 50% of total funding. "The $32.4 billion budget, which was approved by the Senate 54-1 and the House 170-3 on the final day of the 2023 legislative session. The new fiscal year begins July 1st. Lawmakers cut $66 million from the University System of Georgia's budget. University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue blasted the funding decrease, which will hurt schools across the state.
Senate Appropriation Charman Blake Tillery said the University System had more than $500 million cash at hand that can be used to make up for the spending cuts. The spending plan includes about $50 million for another research tower at Georgia State University in Atlanta, $37 million more for the second phase of a modernization project at the University of Georgia, and $30 million Tech Square at Georgia Tech, as well as an $4.6 million academic building at Kennesaw State University."
