RE: Is JMU the best football program in Virginia?
At present, I would say yes. Historically, I would say that Virginia Tech has the best football program in regards to tradition and status. They've had far more success than the Cavaliers, even.

However, the fact that a team like Virginia Tech can lose to the likes of Old Dominion and James Madison tells me less that VT is a bad program. Instead, it tells me that the state of Virginia has more football talent than many likely give the state credit for.

Your best win was probably over a mediocre App State team. Lost by 24 to Louisville that wasn’t great. No doubt Liberty has the best team until Freeze started putting his attention on the Auburn job and he lost the locker room. It’s the only way you can explain a win at Ark and then loses to UCONN and NMSU. It’ll be interesting to see how JMU recruits going forward. If I remember right your class last year was terrible and it’s not starting great this year.

It really makes no sense that we’re an hour from each other and we don’t play. It would be a guaranteed sellout for the home team. Good luck this upcoming season.

VT/UVa are still on a different level there, and Liberty is employing the "buy a program" approach. We're rapidly improving, and UVa/VT have been in definite decline, but there is a lot more work to do.

Now, if you want to argue about best/most efficient run programs, I think you could argue that JMU has done more with less. A few more years of strong results combined with enhancements to the above areas, and JMU could stake a claim similar to what App has accomplished in NC.

I’m in this boat. There are sooo many ways to define the mark of a program that stretches beyond simply competing for wins and losses on the field. The challenge is competing with these schools in all the off the field stuff. As mentioned above, I think JMU has a good argument for best team in the state any given year…VT/UVA aren’t perennial king slayers…but I’d also say that both UVA and VT also can significantly disrupt JMUs program if they pointed their efforts towards it - whether that be throwing money towards legislation lobbying, coach stealing, marketing, facilities upgrades, etc. - the massive difference in financial support can’t be understated. Unfortunately, outside of the ACC imploding, UVA/VT being somehow kicked out of the ACC, or the Sunbelt falling into hundreds of millions of dollars for yearly dispersal, their “programs” are just too cash rich to compete with off the field.

****.

Now I’ve got to switch gears and start defending JMU.

The lesson here is that nobody likes arrogant ass Hokies or Hoos, so don’t be that guy. Kick ass if you can and write their name down on your scorecard so you can shut that **** down. We’re in this together.

There’s ZERO excuses for losing to UCONN and NMST. Next.

Do you not remember JMU won the Sunbelt East with FCS recruits? Moronic comment.

And we do play in a couple of years. Issue is no one likes Liberty and it's not exactly a resume win, especially when you are now in essentially what is the FCS conference of FBS.

Best team last year? Yes. Best team this year? Possibly. Best program overall? No. That honor goes to VT and then UVA.

I love how JMU always has consecutive bad recruiting classes and somehow wins games with those terrible players. Hmmmm

I'd say we need to beat UVA this year, and VT one more time soon before we can even ask this question.. Liberty is no joke anymore 03-wink ...agree that we should play more!

Best team in VA debate was certainly Liberty vs JMU last year, which I love even though I hate Liberty because f the bum ass hokies. To say no doubt Liberty was the best is hilarious. JMU's play through Centeio's injury is your main argument against JMU while in the next sentence dismissing Liberty's losses due to Freeze having one foot out the door... Both had very good teams who unfortunately went through obstacles that made them look much worse for a stretch.

We'll see you in a couple years. Better hope you don't somehow lose to our terrible recruits like so many other teams do.

Is JMU the best football program in Virginia?
Listen to this podcast and then evaluate again whether JMU has the best sports program in VA.

I think JMU has a strong case. It would either be UVA or JMU. 2 national championships and numerous conference championships.

Best "sports" programs now? GTFOH.

You have more national championships than 2. According to Wikipedia:

"James Madison has won five national championships from football (2), field hockey, women's lacrosse and archery, giving the Dukes the second most national titles by a college or university in Virginia."

Which is of course a lie as ODU has won 28 team national titles at 4 individual titles.

Edit: That was from the University's wiki page. The athletics page has it right:

"JMU has won five NCAA national championships, third-most among Virginia colleges and universities, trailing only Virginia (31) and Old Dominion (28)."

But I'm sure the interview with your AD is very convincing as well.

JMU is the strongest football program in Virginia and it’s not really close. I’m not saying they’re the best team, but they’ve had the longest tenure of success of any other Va team.

RE: Is JMU the best football program in Virginia?
UVA has the best overall sports program in the state. Excellence in baseball, basketball (though they shouldn't have won that Final Four game against Auburn a few years back but I digress), lacrosse, soccer, etc. While they haven't been very good at football for some time, other sports are thriving.

Though I am biased, I would say that there is an argument to be made that JMU does have the best football program in the state. It is either JMU or VT. Although I think Tech has been vastly overrated as a football program, they did have close to two decades of great seasons that propelled them into that conversation. JMU and VT have been trending in opposite directions for the past 7 or 8 years and if that continues I don't think it'll be very close as to who is the better program.

I think people balk at calling an FCS or G5 school a better program than a P5, but I wouldn't confuse a great program with the level they currently compete in. As an example I would absolutely consider NDSU a better program than Kansas, despite the latter's advantages in money and who they are able to compete against just for being in the Big 12.

Yep, and? They didn't end the season in the top 25.

A win would be likely. These ratings make sense considering the outcome of ODU's games vs UVA and VT, and the outcome of JMU vs ODU. A healthy JMU beats healthy UVA and VT 8 out of 10 times.

JMU: #49
Liberty: #73
UVA: #97
VT: #104
ODU: #115

How cute. Fans of the WORST football team in the state casting aspersions.
