RE: USF joins AAU
This is awesome news for USF. This was President Genshaft’s goal for her entire stay at USF, many made fun of the goal and kept saying we would never get in.

Well this is a great day for her legacy and the university

Arizona State is behemoth, they really have a lot going on at that Tempe campus. I recall visiting there for the first time 25 years ago and being very impressed. I bet it has grown a lot since then too. The focus in the media sometimes seems to be on the quantity, but they have a lot of deep-faculty quality there as well.

clt says it is hard to believe they are aau with that acceptance rate.

clt says it is hard to believe they are aau with that acceptance rate.

1. acceptance rate is a meaningless number and it says nothing at all about the ease or difficulty of being admitted to a university

2. the AAU looks at the overall mission of a university and in The State of Arizona with only 3 public universities it is not possible for a public university to have extremely high admissions standards because that defeats the purpose of them being a public university in a state with limited options

this in contrast to a place like Texas or California with 30 or more public universities each it is much easier for some universities to have extremely high admissions requirements because there are still plenty of other options for students

and the AAU will take that into consideration when they use the "peer" comparisons of universities both in and outside of the AAU

Congratulations Bulls!

Pretty good month for the conference, tripling it’s number of AAU schools, and moving in to the top five of FBS conferences in “number of AAU schools”.

No you didn't. Aau isn't the same as academic ranking where USF is far behind FSU. It's just research dollars in many cases and buying your way in. Notre Dame wasn't aau until just now and they are far ahead of many older aau schools academically . Nobody had Buffalo ranked over Notre Dame

When it comes to AAU, which is an elite group, we are.

So proud of what USF has accomplished in such a short time. Glad to join Tulane and Rice in this elite group.

Well the great Tampa cancer center which USF attached to smartly has a lot to do with that. My dad goes there so I'm grateful for that

Still well behind Florida State in actual academics and won't catch them. Besides FSU is close to aau as well

It's a big thing still don't get me wrong. Will probably help with big 12 or acc invite once all the good sports programs leave the ACC

But if you think schools like Stony Brook and buffalo were better than Notre Dame before the recent days...you are on something.

IMO, ND vs Buffalo is a case of a "small private" an undergraduate-focused institution, and a "big public" like Buffalo, which makes for IMO a difficult comparison given that AAU has seemingly stressed size and graduate programs in the past. ND was clearly higher-ranked and more prestigious, but had a different focus.

In contrast, FSU and USF are both "big publics", so I think the comparison is more apt.

I do concede that, e.g., US News has FSU ranked considerably higher than USF, and if someone wants to use that metric, they can. But I prefer AAU - LOL. :)

That's because AAU is more about research dollars. A lot of that has to do with attachments to Moffitt which really doesn't impact the majority of USF grads or the academic standing.

That's fine if YOU want to consider it however you want. But logical people know USF didn't pass FSU because of this.

Helps them differentiate from ucf, fiu and FAU and such so it's big. But you are going too far with it is what I'm saying . Buffalo has been AAU for awhile and are in the MAC...

Still I think USF has enough going for it that this will help when the acc is pillaged to get into the watered down acc or the improved big 12 (from what it is now)

wrong here. AAU is the gold standard for academics and administrators in higher education. It carries serious weight. USF just had a lot of doors open for them to partner with the elite of the elite in research opportunities. These opportunities are not available to FSU et al.

You make good points on the rest, AAU membership is an indication of, but not necessarily a definitive conviction of a rigorous undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

No arguing that the research bona fides are there and that is of paramount importance to modern day Big Academia (that is not necessarily a good thing)

Congrats to USF and those that care about this sort of thing.
