I just spent some time looking at the highlight videos and have come to the conclusion that in 2023 we may well have the best quarterback room we have had in a long time, if not the best ever with Colton Joseph, Grant Wilson, Jack Shields and Tyler Stott (PWO).

I believe Joseph, Wilson and Shields will have a close competition beginning in August, and I would not even attempt to rank them at this time, but whoever emerges as the starter, I think we will be in really good shape.

I don't usually get too excited watching highlight videos but have to say I really like Colton Joseph. Since he's not participated with the team we don't have a lot to go on, but he looks like a real prospect to me.

For 2023, the battle is between Wilson and Shields. Colton is the long term prospect that they are super high on but you’d need the season to go sideways for him to see playing time as a true freshman.

I like Wilson a lot . I think he has all the tools though its tough to project how someone will do moving up a level.

Despite that, I cant agree that this is one of the stronger QB rooms. I know they have liked Shields since he came on campus (kinda like Poff) and Im sure the offensive staff likes Wilson. Im just very skeptical and would rather them be in competition with an experienced single caller. Im guessing if Joseph ends up getting time, its because we had injuries or really poor QB play.

Would have been nice if Tim DeMorat wasn't out of eligibility.

SG, I fully understand your point of view on this, especially since we have not seen any of these three in a regular season game at S. B. Ballard Stadium. Also, in the Heinicke era we saw QB rooms with Heinicke/DeMarco and Heinicke/Washington, but I just cannot find a QB triad as strong as I believe we will have this year in Wilson, Joseph and Shields. As they say, time will tell. Cheers!

Talk about hindsight, had Poff stayed and progressed as a QB he'd probably be a 1-2 QB here now.

Isn't Rahne still trying to get an experienced QB from the transfer portal to sign with ODU that he hopes or expects will be the starter this season?

I don't have a lot of faith in the 2023 season. Alot players have transferred out and I see none coming in. On defense, we're gonna get a lot of points scored on us. Unless ODU goes back to that Big12 ish offense where we score 30-40 points a game, I don't see us winning many games this season!

I agree with this. And our QB room is still rather unproven at best. Not saying they will not be able to contribute and do well, but there are a ton of question marks still. Just b/c we have a new OC does not automatically mean points will come with it. We have lost a ton of offensive production that needs to be replaced.

Seriously, the 2023 class is at 44 student athletes right now. 9 of those 44 are transfers, which is a lot more than none. And that 9 will grow.

5 of the remaining 35 are jucos, 5 are walk-ons and 25 are high school recruits.

Are all of the 9 transfer players on scholarship? Out of the 9, only 3 were FBS players, and 2 were scholarship guys on FCS teams. I assume Wilson is on scholarship along with those other 5. Id think there's a chance the other 3 are PWOs?

I went back and looked at the videos again. The more I looked at Wilson, the better I liked him. Then add that he played in Coach Decker's offense at Fordham and that Joseph (likely his closest competitor) is a true freshman, not yet on campus, and I have to believe he will be the starter against the Hokies on September 2nd.

Man, I am ready for some football, and it's going to be a long summer.

Trying to figure out how many open scholarships we have so we know how many more recruits we can hope to land.

Trying to figure out how many open football scholarships is pointless. You will never get an accurate count. It constantly changes.
