NU was back on the field hosting Towson for a 3-game series. The two teams played a doubleheader Friday with bad weather forecasted for Sunday.
NU swept the twin bill, winning 6-5 and 12-8.
Game 1: NU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, highlighted by Cam Maldonado’s 2-run HR, his 10th of the season. They led 4-1 in the 5th with starter Aiven Cabral cruising but he ran into trouble as he gave up a 3-run homer that tied it up at 4-4.
In the 8th inning, Mike Sirota ripped a 2-run HR to put NU ahead 6-4. Towson rallied in the 9th to cut it to 6-5, but closer Griffin Young, with a runner on 3rd was able to get the save and the win.
Game 2: Once again NU jumped on the scoreboard early with a four-run first inning. In the 2nd, Sirota smacked another 2-run HR to make it 6-0. Starter Eric Yost had another solid outing with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing thee runs on eight hits, one walk, and two punch outs. NU was up 9-3 in the 8th when Towson again rallied with 5 runs to cut it to 9-8. But Sirota capped his big day, hitting his 3rd homer, another 2-run shot to make it 11-8.
NU is now in first place, a half game ahead on UNCW, who split a DH at Hofstra. They’re now 34-7 overall.
The two teams play Saturday at 1pm (weather permitting).
