Give him 2.5 mil per year and he breaks even after just one year. 10 year deal means nothing, Just sounds good for FAU fans. When he is ready to go, and some one else wants him he will go. He may well like it at FAU, but it would be hard to turn down extra mil or 2 per year. Especially if the fit and feel is right.
It means something from the FAU side. Say he's unable to replicate this year and struggles for 3 years. FAU might be looking at paying 7 years of buyout to move on depending how it's worded. Obviously May had all the negotiating leverage

Sounds like it leaves him a pretty easy out after next season if he's still a commodity, but also gets good press and makes the program look as stable as possible for recruiting and donation purposes. Win/win

The level of bad they’d have to be to waste all the goodwill of a Final 4 in 3 years is realistically not achievable.

Only $1 Million buyout if he leaves on or after March 1, 2024...then drops $250,000 every year after that.

Wonder what the buyout is the other direction. 10 years is a long ass time. They needed to lock him down but one, albeit great, year isn't worth a 10 year contract IMO.

If he leaves before the season ends (by Feb 29, 2024), his buyout would be $1.5 Million.

March 1 buyout ($1 Million) decline gives teams weeks prior to the end of the season to decide to make a move on him or not.

Here is his complete contract:
