Former Monarchs Cardinale, McGee place again at NCAA Wrestling Championships
West Virginia 125-pounder Killian Cardinale and Arizona State 133-pounder Michael McGee finished their collegiate careers this weekend hitting the podium and earning All-American honors.

Both were NCAA qualifiers during their time in Norfolk. Cardinale never got the chance to compete at the big show while at ODU because he qualified in the 2020 season and the championships were canceled the week before. Cardinale entered as the #28 seed (due to minimal matches and injury defaulting out of the Big 12 tournament). He reached the quarterfinals and then beat Cornell's Brett Ungar to earn a spot on the podium.

McGee ended up placing third, falling in overtime to Penn State's two-time NCAA champion Roman Bravo-Young. RBY fell in the finals to Cornell's Vito Arujau. McGee beat three-time runner-up Daton Fix of Oklahoma State for third place. McGee lost in the match to place as a freshman at ODU. He redshirted in 2020 and moved to 133.

In all, five former Monarchs competed.

Shannon Hanna, a SoCon champion at 141 pounds for Campbell as well as Alex Cramer for Central Michigan at 174 and Jacob Bullock from Indiana at 285.

... just a real "what could have been"

Former Monarchs scored 21 team points, which would have been good for 26th. (Obviously coming out of the MAC would have been different in seeding and such)

BRING. IT. BACK.

I thought RBY got his butt kicked in that match. I don't think I had ever seen him lose before that.

I watched McGee and Fix's match this morning on train on the way to work. Pretty big win for him. Fix is a beast.

... obviously everyone knows my tie to the school, but my co-announcer's son was on the team when it was dropped. So the NCAA championships will always have some type of representation as long as Hazard and an I are on the PA.
