UNCW/CofC CAA Tournament finals 2023
Jan 11th. Round 1 at Trask- Lost 71-69. UNCW came out timid, fought back in the second half to take the lead and had a chance to win with the ball in our hands on the last shot. CofC shot 39% from the field, 34.5% from three and hit 15-17 FT's. Hawks' shot 44.6% from the field, 37.5% from three and hit 13-16 FT's. Hawks' outrebounded CofC 37-35. Both team has 10 turnovers. It was truly an evenly matched game in almost every aspect. Thomas, White, Kelly and MHH all scored at least 12 points.

Feb 8th. Round 2 at Charelston - Lost 61-93. CofC took control from the start and had a 46-27 lead and then scored 47 in the second half. UNCW was trying to figure out how to win with the loss of Ross to injury and we just weren't ready. No UNCW player was in double figures as the Hawks' shot 30.2% from the field, 20% from three and we were outrebounded 42-23. Also had 18 turnovers. Meanwhile CofC shot 52.5% from the field, 41.7% from three and made 21-26 FT.s Charleston really imposed their will with their big men as Brzovic scored 23, Burnham 18 and Robinson 18. They had 42 points in the paint to UNCW's 26.

March 7th. Round 3 in DC - Who is going to show up? Charleston has the size advantage and they used it in their blowout win. So, what can UNCW do to counter that? I know it would never happen, but I think mixing in some zone could really help. We just don't have the size to play that game with them, but we won't play zone so that's just wishful thinking. I really have no idea what the coaches have in mind but I do know the key to beating CofC is rebounding. Everything they do is driven by rebounding. Match them on the boards and we have a chance. Also have to be aggressive on offense and get to the bucket. Rebounding is all about desire and toughness so it also reflects on everything we do against them. Having Ross back should make a big difference on the boards and on defense. I also think Nick will have a much bigger impact when he isn't in front of such huge home or away crowds. He was 4-11 in the two games so far and 0-3 from three. He did have 6 rebounds total with only 1 turnover in 27 minutes of play, although he only played 9 minutes in the second game.

So here's my prediction.

CofC +8 or more on the boards, we lose
CofC +1 or less, we win.

Zone is a terrible idea against a team that shoots threes and rebounds well. Those are literally the two hardest things to do when playing zone, guard the three, and rebound. Good thing we know coach won't play any.

CofC isn't a great three point shooting team, their entire offense revolves around getting to the paint and kicking out to three point shooters. They really beat you on the interior and when you collapse they make you pay by drawing fouls and getting to the FT line or kicking out for open threes' with feet set. Zone would limit their drives and take away the FT advantage they have in most games. It would also limit their ability to kick out to open shooters. Also, they rebound well because of long rebounds off missed three's. They have 684 FT attempts to their opponents 485.

There is no great way to stop their offense since they have so many weapons, but our weakness is overall size to stop their penetration or their ability to get post position. If we play man and double, they are great and finding open shooters. Not all zone, but mixed in to throw them off.

RE: UNCW/CofC CAA Tournament finals 2023
Best ways to beat a zone:
- Drive and kick -CHECK
-crash the boards-CHECK
- Pass the ball well and fast- CHECK
While they don't shoot it at an extremely high % they will if they get open.
I grew up a Cuse fan, and played predominantly zone in 15 years of coaching i've been exposed to a ton of zone in my life. CoC is a team i'd never even remotely think about playing zone against. But as the two of us usually do, we are splitting hairs because we both know we ain't playing zone anyways. lol

Zone was shown for a possession or two last night against Hofstra, out of a timeout. At least gives CofC something else to prepare for on short notice. Should be an interesting night.

Wasn't it a bit of a half court trap, and fell back into a zone?

RE: UNCW/CofC CAA Tournament finals 2023
Charleston doesn't really have to change their game plan after going 2-0 and dominating us last time out. They have the formula to win and it's pretty much their same formula in a year they have won 30 games. Rebound liker hell, drive to the bucket to get fouls or score, kick out to shooters off the drive, get up the court in transition. That's it. So the question is "what does UNCW do to beat Charleston"?.

Pretty much what we did in the first game. Match them on the boards and get back in transition to defend. Play really hard and fight for every ball and every point and go on the attack. You cannot play not to lose against CofC because they keep coming and will break you eventually. We know they can execute their game plan, but can we?

Half time

Hawks +4 on the boards and 41% from the field. So far so good.

Very disappointing, that game was within reach and some serious missteps with personnel down the stretch cost us that game.

RE: UNCW/CofC CAA Tournament finals 2023
coming out of the under 4 timeout it was tied.

we made two consecutive unforced turnovers, basically spotting them 4 points.

17 turnovers overall in the game.

If we limit our turnovers, especially those late ones, we win. We got Charleston to play our game

Arguably, they got us to play their game when it mattered. Gotta play “our game” for 40 minutes next time. We also need the coaches to make good decisions for 40 minutes. Not all of that loss was on the players.

Newby and Farrar were terrible on both ends of the end of the game-no clue why they were left in the game .

Newby making the all-Tournament team is absolutely laughable too.

Shot .263 overall, 4-17 (.235) from 3 and turned the ball over 6 times across his 3 games. Terrible.

Coach has problems adjusting his personnel to what is working/not working in a game. We saw it time and time again this season. Not using Nick when he's playing well, then leaving him in too long in the title game when he wasn't. Benching Ross at the end of the game when he was a lynchpin during the positive run. just a few recent examples but there are many more. He's got to figure that out an quit being stubbornly loyal to guys that are hurting the team at times.
