RE: CAA Men’s Tourney
If Dorsey and Collier were active I'm quite sure Rice and Milkereit would not be playing (Ayesa, not sure). Dane has never really played more than 8 in a must-win game, although of course we certainly might play 9 on Saturday. It is not for the better, but we're making do with the circumstances.

I agree that Tyler Rice seems to be much more effective a two guard. Hopefully we can keep him.

I certainly am for tight rotations, but for the last 2 games Dane went a solid 8 and used Charley strategically as a 9th player in some instances when he wanted/needed to take Ben off the court but still have a big on the floor. If his goal on Saturday is to do everything he can to win but still have a peripheral eye on Sunday, I go with a more solid 9 man rotation and give Charley some extra minutes and give Ben some more time off of his feet. On the other hand, if Noah were available, I would still go 9 with Noah getting the Charley minutes. I am not a big fan at this point of seeing Ben and Noah on the floor together for long periods of time.

(03-02-2023 04:21 PM)WMTRIBE75 Wrote:  I am not remotely suggesting that this year's team is going to play way over their heads in DC and garner up memories of the 2008 "Miracle at the Coliseum" team, but I will say that over the last three weeks this year's team finally found its identity and seemed to play with a game plan that gives us a shot at winning on any given night. That stretch of 6 games began with a road loss at Elon, our first without Gabe and Noah, which we were competitive in even with the additional first half loss of Jake. The remaining two road games were the overtime loss at Stony Brook that we took to overtime after erasing a 7 point deficit in the last 2 minutes, and the loss to Northeastern where we were putrid in the first half but played very solid in the second half, unlike last year's "mail it in" gang. The three home victories, also without Gabe and Noah, were the big upset of Towson and two must wins over Elon and Monmouth.

So what did the coaching staff finally figure out when injuries to two important starters finally required thinking out of the box? Here are a few of my observations of changes perhaps born out of necessity:

(1) Milk cartons do work. Somehow we managed to find Tyler, Miguel, and Jake.

(2) Miguel is a perimeter threat that teams have to account for.

(3) Tyler can actually play some defense and does not turn the ball over as much when you do not make him the primary ball handler.

(4) Tyler is willing to take the open 3 and also finish at the rim

(5) Ben is wayyy more effective on offense when he is the only big man on the floor for us.

(6) Zone defense is legal in college ball.

(7) Mixing up defenses and throwing a little 3 quarter court zone trap into the mix occasionally is fun.

(8) When you are on offense, you do not want to see the referee pat the top of his head.

(9) Guard penetration is only great if it results in something other than a shot clock violation.

(10) Matteus Case is becoming a very good guard on both ends of the court.

(11) When someone plays zone against you, it actually helps when you put good
perimeter shooters in the game who are willing to take an open shot.

(12) Contrary to their apparent thinking, you really do not help your defense by telling your offense that shot clock violations actually mean that the defense got their full 30 second rest.

I am sure that there are more things that I have missed, and I encourage all to add to the list. Let's keep it positive.

GO TRIBE!!

75–Your list is spot on. Let’s see how far it takes us.

Monmouth looked like a young team, with talent (raw talent, but talent), when they played us. If they stay together, they could be a solid team over the next few years.

A worthwhile read on Monmouth HC King Rice.

Verily. It is also our first win at that venue; so it is good to get that monkey off our back. I hope we start our second game better tomorrow than Monmouth started their second game today.
