Southern Miss MBB snags 3 AP poll votes
It’s not on the AP’s own report for some reason, but CBS & USA Today show it.

https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college...tball-poll

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...nkings/ap/

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...nkings/ap/

Who knew the key to getting pollsters’ attention was losing by 30 points?

Nice! Was wondering when that might happen if USM kept winning.

If USM beats ODU and Texas State AND wins the SBC Tournament, I believe they'd be ranked. That's going to be tough to do though.

Getting ranked or winning out?

Very nice, congrats! Here's the plan guys: JMU and Southern Miss just beat the snot out of everyone until the championship game. Then JMU wins an insane back and forth 3OT game for the auto bid and we pray that Southern Miss has a sliver of hope for an at large 04-cheers

And this time last year I'm sure everyone thought near March 2023 USM and Duke would have the same amount of AP poll votes.

Apparently the votes were supposed to be for Mississippi State, but idiot sports writers can't keep their teams straight. Either way I'll take them. If you can't keep your teams straight you shouldn't be a sports writer. That simple.

Yes, they said it was a joke after most people took it seriously. I don't think most people knew it was a joke at first since it was entirely plausible and something that's actually happened before. Then there is the issue that some of the sites were actually not recording the 3 votes for USM making it sound even more likely to be true.

The one voter who did vote for us (ranked at 23 giving us 3 votes) thinks we are in conference USA still.

As I said I'll take votes anyway they come though.

Unfortunately, we are still a one bid league. I read an article today from CBS sports bracketology that noted some years there could be teams in the top 30 in the NET get left off based on resume...

Ya it all comes down to those quad 1 wins. We need to have multiple teams in the top 75 in the Sun Belt that can get the wins off each other rather than hoping we can get them out of conference which will be rare.

I like the first 2/3s of your plan :)

On the bright side we do have four that are sniffing the top 75 right now. Very plausible that several could get over that hump next year. Ideally with at least one going above and beyond.

LOL we would thrash MSU this year.

Maybe - but USM would be a 7-8 point underdog on a neutral floor to the Bullies . . .

If a top 30 score can’t get you in a 68-team field, it’s a completely useless metric and no one should even bother keeping up with it. Why are people so resistant to just admitting it’s a money-chasing popularity contest and getting on with their lives?

That said, we don’t deserve an at-large this year with our “bad losses” to “good wins” ratio, and I’m OK with that.
