Dr Javier Reyes has been named the next Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts.

Quote: President Marty Meehan "I am convinced that he will be a fitting successor to the man who has guided UMass Amherst with such skill and distinction over the last decade, Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy."

In fact, Chancellor Subbaswamy said this about Dr. Reyes: “His prior experience at two land-grant flagships, his record of assembling and leading collaborative teams, his temperament, and his friendly personality all bode well for the continuation of UMass Amherst’s progress and impact into the future.”

University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen told his university community yesterday that “Javier Reyes has shown himself to be a rising star in higher education leadership and this opportunity at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is well-deserved.”

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee described Dr. Reyes as having “a proven record of cultivating important relationships through energetic engagement with the academic and business communities to create experiential learning opportunities which are crucial to student success in today’s competitive higher education landscape.”

Amanda Fernandez, CEO and Founder, Latinos for Education, noted the strong message this appointment sends about inclusivity: “Seeing Latino leadership at the highest levels of education is an important signal to not only the Latino community, but to an ever-diverse student body that representation matters … Mr. Reyes will certainly bring an important perspective to UMass Amherst.”

Reyes, 48, was appointed interim chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago on July 1, 2022, and previously served as UIC's provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. The University of Illinois Chicago is an R1 Carnegie Classification research institution. That's pretty close to MAC territory and maroon shirt. The guy with a pink shirt, with the beverage is the AD, Ryan Bamford.

Hoping MWC Commissioner, Gloria Nevarez can provide her valuable insight to both AD Ryan Bamford and Chancellor Reyes as she received her achievement award last night with her parents.
