Kudos to Wylie for an excellent game and getting us thinking football and away from the next 683 posts on EMU MBB. 03-nutkick

HINT: We are now a football school. Men's basketball was so 1990s...

You're so correct regarding football versus basketball! In the late 80's, early 90's we were actually both! Basketball has become irrelevant accept A few years under Murphy!

Good thing is that Wylie was not injured and had a good game.

These things come and go. Remember when Indiana and UNLV were in MBB's power elite. UNLV was virtually unbeatable 30 years ago.

resource management in the MAC as a whole has shifted the whole conference away from basketball. the MAC just cant out recruit the Horizon league.

True. There are two factors here I think.

1). Horizon League is a non-football conference and doesn't have the big expenses of football.

2). Oakland, as I repeat every so often, has been a thorn in the side of EMU and other MAC schools. Right or wrong, I claim Oakland's ascendance and EMU stagnation seem to fit on the same timeline. OU seems more contiguous to Detroit than EMU .AND. this is the big:

Top talent from Detroit has moved to the NORTHERN SUBURBS. So when someone says 'Detroit' do they REALLY mean Southfield, Orchard Lake, etc. etc.? They may be talking Detroit OR they may be talking Oakland County. 03-idea If they are talking Oakland County, then OU has the natural advantage. OR the east side of Detroit is much closer to OU than EMU.

The demography of Oakland County has changed greatly in my lifetime.

RE: Super Sunday: A Day Late
BTW, a simple P.S. It may seem obvious but football, not basketball, is the sport which drives NCAA sports. Even though the first weekend of the NCAA March Madness tourney is great, football is still king of the hill.

And those who have been following MAC football for the last 25 years know MAC football got ratcheted up when Marshall joined and was immediately highly successful with Randy Moss, Chad Pennington, Doug Chapman, etc. and later Byron Leftwich. They produced on the field and produced a number of NFL starters (e.g., Moss, Pennington, Leftwich, etc.).

Schools like TOL, MIA, BG, etc. took up the challenge. MAC was producing NFL QBs from MIA, Akron, TOL, etc. (Big Ben, Gradkowski, Charlie Frye, etc.)

So in those days we had Pennington, Leftwich, Big Ben, Gradkowski, Charlie Frye, etc. and lest I forget we had a NFL QB, also named 'Charlie.'

Now????

RE: Super Sunday: A Day Late
I suspect that carnival play where the Chiefs pranced around the backfield was designed to be a pass to the good hands former TE and tackle-eligible Wylie, but the Eagles DB did not bite. Gosh I wish it had happened; NOBODY would have deserved it more.

Wylie was forced to change from TE to tackle in college. UDFA, and cut by THREE teams, before he landed in Kansas City where many said the Chiefs needed to upgrade his position, but he held his job.

Today on ESPN, an analyst said the Chiefs MUST retain both of their great offensive tackles, rather than their current top receivers. Andrew Wylie is a model for persistence and a well-deserved millionaire. Hats off to him.

Are you confusing him with Cole Gardner? To my knowledge Wylie was never a TE, he played OT in HS and OT and OG at EMU.

According to 247 Sports, Andrew was always a big boy. Never TE-sized.

I looked up the 2014 EMU football media guide. Wylie was always an OL.
Sounds like indeed Cole Gardner, not Wylie.

We have a lot of great stories in the recent history of the football program since CC got hired. Guys who got cut, ended up on the practice squad and eventually solid NFL careers. Hopefully Jose and others will join them.
