RE: 2023 WAC baseball
Late to the party but the Hornets are doing Hornet things and getting off to a solid start to the season. Hornets are 6-1 and beat Nevada today...er yesterday. We now head to LA to face USC, UCLA, and Tulane in the Southern California College Baseball Classic.

Not sure what to think of this team yet, I think we're a few bats and arms short of posting any kind of challenge to GCU in the west. I think the offseason hire of Jon Wente will be tremendous for the development of our young pitching staff.

Good to see some WAC teams getting some big non-conference wins. WAC baseball has been pretty solid since we jettisoned the APR anchors a few years back.

BTW, are we not on ESPN+ anymore? WAC Digital Network is not free? Is the quality there to justify signing up for it?

RE: 2023 WAC baseball
Normally, we are pretty solid, splitting the regular season championship with y'all the year we were in the WAC. Still early, but 3-6 on the year with a few lopsided losses to average or below isn't promising.

That said, we got a solid start and quality relief today in a 5-4 win over Northwestern State.

The Cats blow chunks at the end of game 3 against HCU, but still win 3 of the 4 games. We end up 10-3 over-all so far. We should be 11-2; jeez.

UTRGV takes 2 of 3 from the Houston Cougars for the first time since 1991 back then known as UTPA. Up next for UTRGV is a short trip to Houston to take on Rice Owls before returning back to face CBU.

Something needed to happen. 0-7 isn't going to cut it. Especially when your AD played baseball for said university.

I did not notice, but the 7th loss was to Benedectine Mesa. They lost 3-9. Things did not get better over the weekend as they were swept by Pacific and NMSU now sits at 0-10.

To give you an idea, they were swept by Bellarmine (new DI program) and Pacific, lost single games to Lamar, Northwestern St and Seton Hall and also Benedictine Mesa. Ouch.

Grand Canyon is next, the real next chance for their first win is Ottawa-Arizona on 14 March, but they are 9-5-1.

Lopes take 2 of 3 from Texas State on the weekend and climb to #2 in the 11point7 D1 Mid Major Baseball rankings I saw floating around socials last night. Looking forward to U of Arizona coming through Tuesday night for a game (GCU and UA are the only 2 teams to beat #3 Tennessee so far this season) before NMSU arrives for the weekend series.

UTA's should rise a bit as the Mavs beat #10 TCU at their place tonight.

RE: 2023 WAC baseball
Not sure why we are down at #153 after beating Nevada and Oklahoma, as well as our other mid-major DI opponents to be 10-3. Nevada themselves are still ranked several places above us and we took the series 3-1... I am sure they are looking at SOS, but our SOS isn't that bad and, again, they rank the head to head opponent several places above us after beating them.

A lot has to do with road versus home wins. UTA will jump after betating #17 TCU on the road. We fell a bit after dropping 2 of three to McNeese at home.

That's about the only thing that makes sense since we haven't played on the road yet, except for our neutral game against Oklahoma. Still, to see a team you beat 3 times, and another team you beat on a neutral site, ahead of you in the polls is BS.

I'd worry more about standings in May than March, but if polls are a chip the team carries around on their shoulders that keeps them locked in and performing at a high level, then it's all worth it. 04-cheers

Also remember that it’s early. These things will usually sort themselves out as more and more games get entered into the formula.
