04-cheers His Schtick gets real old real quick for me. I like announcers I barely realize are there.

I'm with you.

RE: Dick Vitale
I like the goofy enthusiasm of Dick Vitale and Lee Corso. It's just a personal taste.

Now if you have someone like Pat McAfee that has the same boisterous and bloviating style while trying and completely failing to be funny, it's the most obnoxious thing in sports broadcasting.

I love Dickie. When he returned last year to call his first game back and got emotional. I was watching live and struggled to hold back the tears. He's 100 percent sincere and authentic.

A poster on Phog Net a few years back said he had met Mr Vitale during a layover at an airport and talked with him for a good few minutes. He described him as friendly and generous with his time, wanting to talk basketball. Our poster said he did not seem so over the top as he seems on-air, and Mr Vitale said that his on-air manner was something that ESPN preferred and urged him to come across that way, fwiw. That may be why some fans don't warm to the way he comments on games. He does love the game.

I don't think anyone thinks he doesn't love the game or isn't a great dude... his style, though, is just more reminiscent of a quirky home announcer who was misplaced in a national broadcast.

Retiring would be his best move.

Same.

My favorite Vitale quote: "The NBA is about the name on the back of the jersey. College basketball is about the name on the front of the jersey."

When he does hang it up, I think it would be fitting if the final game he calls is Duke-North Carolina in the final week of the regular season. His two favorite teams.

He can easily go another 84 to 85 years IMO.
