As far as Emoni Bates college basketball player comp. How about Anfernee Hardaway when he was at Memphis State (not Memphis). Similar body type, swagger, Bates maybe a better long range shooter.

I was somewhat past it all once we started setting the record straight (and even Sidelines Twitter account called it out)…

But then that Memphis fan from Texas posts on here chiming in on the Emoni Bates debate, and I got p***ed beyond belief. You’re gonna invite this s*** in here???? People here need to get past their incompetence and delusions, be decent, and if nothing else avoid creating fodder for the outside idiots. Celebrate for EMU what we have to celebrate. It certainly isn’t a good basketball team- but at least we’ll get an NBA draft pick. He is one of us, defend your own. It is in your self interest. And not to beat a dead horse: just treat Emoni Bates (and any other player) like human being regardless!!!

I am just so disgusted by some of those on here. I think I am going to take a break from this forum. Otherwise, I am going to be making a lot of enemies real fast among our fellow posters… But thanks for fighting the good fight to Steve and BobW and all others who are of like mind!! Go EMU!!!
Ramy, don't give up. We need you! Certain posters here were going to be anti Emoni Bates no matter what. There was nothing he was going to do that would please some people here which absolutely blows my mind. His body language, his hairstyle, his perceived cockiness, and the most disgusting and egregious allegation: that he wasn't really hurt when he took a spill in a game! Stay positive. I think there are some special moments still to come. This team (Emoni) has already produced 2 thrilling, jump out of your seat, high five everyone in the room games: Michigan and Toledo. I don't think he will be around next season so enjoy every remaining game...if somehow he gets on a crazy hot run, who knows maybe we can still shock the (MAC) world!

RamyEMU, I seriously don't understand how anyone on this board can say anything but positives about Emoni! He's averaging 21 pts and 6 Rbs a game! No one else is even close! He's a big time talent! The fact that the team is 4-16, and 1-6 in the MAC isn't his fault! Without him we would be without a doubt 1-19, and that only win would be versus A D2 school! Don't blame him period, there's only one person to blame, and that's Stan Heath, sorry he's 14-37 at EMU, with 3 D2 wins! Only 11 D1 wins currently! You don't hire a coach with a losing track record! Heath has been A college coach for 15 seasons, only 5 have been winning seasons! And, one of those was at Kent St, where he inherited a team who's top nine players returned! This is who you blame! He has won 27 percent of his games at EMU! Tod K went 4-28 his 1st year at Toledo and then 19-17 in year 2! Look at Groce at Akron, Ohio U coach in year 2, Rob Murphy won the MAC West in year one, and went 14-18, then 16-18 in year 2, and in year 3 22-15! Heath's career record without the gift one season at Kent St is 193-244! 51 games below .500! Bronkema, Boykins, would've been much better choices! If you throw in the Kent St year, he's still 21 games below .500! His career record at Kent St was 30-6, he inherited the team! Arkansas 82-71, South Florida 97-130, E Michigan 14-37! Again if you're an AD is this what you want?
The blame Stan Heath broken record is almost as bad as the Emoni hate. It's got to stop. In one breath you say that Emoni is special (true) and that no one else on the team is close to him in talent (also true). Here's the thing. It is hard to win games with one productive player. You watched the Toledo game, it was 5 on 2 out there and Eastern almost pulled it off on the road despite being a 21 point underdog. Heath is coaching with one hand tied behind his back. You know better than that. Coaching is definitely not the problem, a serious lack of blue chip talent outside of Emoni and Noah is the problem. Your dislike of Heath is duly noted, can you please move on from it and maybe revisit it after the season?
Bob Wickersham, I don't dislike Stan Heath, he was brought in too change the culture, and year one the talent was dry, but in year two, with A 5 star recruit playing at the MAC level, and all the players he has brought in, how can we possibly be worse? Basketball a very good coach should begin winning in year two! Not getting embarrassed in multiple games this season! So, Stan Heath has failed miserably! If Groce came to EMU two years ago for example I guarantee we wouldn't be this bad! Why, We don't run any structured offense, it's all one on one, we barley play any defense, we're giving up a mindboggling 82 points per game! You and I are from the same Era late 80's early 90's, and EMU was such a proud basketball school! I just want to see some progression! Bates are been brilliant this season! Yes, he made some mistakes, shown some immaturity at times, but he's 18! When you and I were 18-19 we sure made mistakes, and showed some immaturity! When is the last freshman/sophomore at EMU to average 21 points a game? George Gervin? I'll let up on Heath, but I've been a proud fan for 35 years, and I've lost interest! First time ever!
Did you watch the Toledo game? I did twice. The talent disparity between EMU and Toledo was IMMENSE. A lesser coach loses by 25. Now if you want to blame Heath for bringing in the wrong transfers, that is fair.

As far as losing interest. For the first time in...25-26 years, since Earl Boykins played, I have been thrilled and in awe watching an EMU basketball player! We witnessed greatness Tuesday and earlier vs Michigan. Don't lose interest yet, any given game, Bates has the capability to absolutely go off. If the role players can get it together, this team proved that they can compete against the best in this conference.

Maybe the best comparable. Emoni is taller and thinner but good comparison.

Amen. Basketball, NBA or college, is about STARS, at least that is what they tell me.

I paid $300 on MLKjr day to watch Steph Curry and Porzingas have an incredible shoot out before 21k in D.C.. It would have cost me more to watch the Lakers and their star.

As BobW might say, if you don't understand that you don't understand basketball.

I thought of this high volume wing from UofM: Nik Stauskas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nik_Stauskas

Nik gained weight at UofM and end up a lottery pick. In some respects, his stats remind me of Emoni's at Memphis and EMU. Things like PPG and 3-point FG %. Improved scoring in soph season.

Not a U-M fan but Stauskas was an unbelievable shooter from downtown his last year at Michigan.

Glory, I am probably somewhere in between you and BobW on Coach Heath. In my opinion, Coach Heath has a solid historical record (I realize you disagree). Conversely his record/results at EMU have been certainly less than solid if not outright bad. He was probably experimenting a bit too much with the whole emulating the NBA thing. But he is going to get his full 5 year contract to try to get the right formula for EMU- regardless of what the sentiment we express on this board is. So…

Coach Heath has got 2 more years of recruiting. Since EMU has virtually no media presence, prospective players and parents are going to come to this forum as part of scoping out of EMU scene. What recruit is going to want to come here after reading about all these horrible things about Coach Heath. He is already going to have a tough time recruiting given the team’s record.

If he hasn’t figured things out by year 5, it won’t matter what you say because he will be a lame duck coach at that point. If you can’t wait that long, can you at least wait until next year? We disagree, but I am not at all saying you are wrong. Just there is no incentive, only potential harm, to the program if we paint him so negatively so soon. And he probably deserves a little slack as he tries to get things right- he is one of us after all. Just providing you my train of thought, in case it helps you reconsider some of these posts.

But regardless, I do appreciate your support of the student athletes, especially Emoni Bates. You are a good man, Glory!! Let’s enjoy what we can for now!! Go EMU!!

Spot on. I for one, really underestimated the MAC this season. I have been impressed with the level of play in the games I've watched. The games I haven't watched, I've listened to WEMU, (Helmer has upped his game too, btw) and it can be hard to gauge level of play just by listening. This guy makes an excellent point.

Happy Birthday to Emoni!

I've got family down near Cincinnati, maybe I should bring my kids down to Oxford just in case this is the last Emoni game at EMU.

BobW, I am here until the end, Brother! Win or lose…
04-cheers

I just needed a break from some of the jerks on this forum (and got busy with work). You are right that certain posters were never going like Emoni Bates for whatever reason. Boggles my mind for sure. But moreso disgusts me how irrationally mean they could be. Especially the ones that were clear making things up. No integrity.

Now on to basketball. Go EMU!!
Yessir! 04-cheers

One thing which kind of bothered me was the 'he is a one and done to the NBA.'

Guess what, any player who is a first round talent is probably 'one and done.'

Why should Emoni be treated differently than Chet Holmgren, Banchero and (Jabari) Smith all 'one and done?' (think I have it right all one and done).

This forum has always had a ton of informative posters some (many?) of which also doubled as sour fans who never fully treated the student athletes with respect and way overvalued their own opinion. But the way they were handling Emoni Bates was completely disgusting- and completely irrational if not delusional.

You lost me on this one. I read the article, it did not say anything about one and done. Also, since Emoni reclassified, he is a two and done.

I think the article was actually pretty good. It was projecting Emoni is getting drafted in the range where the sane and rational members of this board were expecting him too. Nice corroboration so we don’t need unnecessary debates with others on this forum who are not of similar/sound mind. (So big thank you for sharing this).
