Game Week Kent St at EMU October 14 2023
Doing early as I will be out of town later this week. For comments re upcoming game. Kent St is 0-2 in conference and 1-5 overall. However nothing can be taken for granted with the way we've been playing this season.

If we play like we did against Ball St we should be good enough to win. Our defense did really well so did special teams. As like every game this our offense lacks consistency. The long passing game is just scary. Keeping passes to less than 10 yards is our best bet.

Should be a blowout but we’ll probably keep it close.
I’m worried about the WMU game now. They look a lot better than I expected. And NIU always gives us fits.
We have a lot of work to do.

Our Defense is playing fantastic. Kudos to them Austin looked better on Saturday and that was promising. He still struggles to throw anything deep but if he can excel with short routes and option to run than he will be good.
I expect to win this game and get to 4-3. It's never easy but if the Offense continues to improve and the Defense does what it does, than we should be fine.

I feel like the coaching staff is getting better at calling games for Austin.

Agree, Dan. Shorter routes with more roll-outs the last 2 weeks. That's what it will take with him.

Dear Friends,
I agree with most of what describes how Eastern is doing on the field of play, but I would like to see some surprise play calling. For example, how about some sweeps around the end with Jackson. What about a reverse, or a flea flicker. Also, what happened to the play for short yardage with Samson as wildcat, he runs toward the line of scrimmage, and just before he gets there, he makes a jump pass to one of our receivers?

RE: Game Week Kent St at EMU October 14 2023
Was busy all weekend, but was thankfully able to watch most of the game. I'm pleasantly surprised with the way the team has played the last two weeks. The offense has played much better, while not amazing or anything, it just seems like the coaching staff is starting to play to their strengths.
Kent State comes in 1-5 and frankly hasn't played well. Their one win was against a sub .500 FCS team, and they pretty much got blown out in all five of their losses. However, if you look at their schedule they have played three good non-conference teams and arguably the two best teams in the MAC (Ohio and Miami-OH)...so they might not be quite as bad as their record.
They give up a ton of yards through the air and on the ground, if we have a similiar game plan as the past two weeks I think we should be able to move the ball....keep the pass game simple, and pound it with Evans and Jackson. Their offense isn't very explosive and the way our D has played this season I think we should be okay.
This could be similiar to the Ball State game. Keep it simple on offense, don't turn it over and we should have a great shot. ESPN has us with a 69% chance of winning.

I am trying to not be a downer, but that CMU loss is going to stick in my craw for a bit. Would really like to blow out Kent.

I agree! That was a game we could (should?) have won.

They are all big games from here on out, but this one to me is special for the following reasons....
1. CC mentioned they have not strung back to back wins yest this season. Winning this would be stetting "The Standard" of how to respond after a win. Home games we get everyone dressed and this consistency of a back-to-back games with participation goes a long way for development.
2. We face 3 big games after Kent (NIU, WMU and Toledo) with 2 of those on the road. Getting to 4-3 ahead of that would put us in a good spot.
3. We have been playing better ball the last 2 weeks and this would be a great opportunity to finally reach our potential on the offensive side of the ball.
4. I started watching the weekly MAC match-ups as it relates to getting to Detroit.
a. We need Ball State at home to beat Toledo to get Toledo to 2-1.
b. We need Central at home to lose to Akron to send CMU to 1-2
c. We need NIU at home to lose to Ohio to send NIU to 1-2
d. We need WMU at home to lose to Miami to send WMU to 1-2
[b]*Should all that happen (very unlikely, we would be in a 1st place tie
My prediction.....Kent State 17 / EMU 28 (weather looks a little dicey for Saturday. low to mid-50's with chance of rain)

Did anyone notice that Javier has switched from OL to DL? Having Haney and Merritt back again are big adds on the defense.

I noticed that in game 1. I met Janvier last winter. Big kid.

Nice post. EMU almost still controls their own destiny. If they win every game, then they win the west as long as CMU drops another game. CMU still has Ohio and UT on the schedule.

Agree, I love our coach, but we are 0-6 in OT games and lose to Toledo when a backup QB completes a 4th and 13 pass. CMU was more of the same that I would like to eliminate.
