I know you didn't say it would happen, I'm genuinely confused as to why you believe it should happen.
Why should a very small school like Gonzaga be forced to sponsor football in order to keep their now indisputably blue blood basketball program? Why should any of those tiny schools with their elite hockey programs be forced to sponsor football AND basketball in order to keep their DI hockey?
Why should any DI be forced to have a required number of sports? Why cant a school play FBS without an invite or having to threaten to sue? Why cant a school play DI in one sport, DII in another and then DIII or NAIA in another?
To have a level field all schools at minimum should be participating in the most expensive sport. Im ok with FCS scholarship football just not the ones who go the cheap route. Gonzaga and the tiny school who cant afford DI sports will go in another direction.
This is an objectively bad take. Gonzaga et al is good for DI basketball
I disagree, Gonzaga is a leach on DI athletics.

How are they good for DI athletics?
They play by a different set of rules than most of the DI athletics. Their cost structure is totally different.

It's not called NCAA football(plus some other sports), if a school with an undergrad population under 5,000 in a region of the country that is not exactly football crazy can go toe to toe with the best basketball schools in the country, why should they be forced to fund a sport they don't want to play that they cannot afford? How are they "leaching" anything?
And by your logic, how are FCS schools not playing by a different set of rules with a totally different cost structure? There are FBS programs that pay their football HC more than entire FCS football budgets.

They should not be forced to fund anything just play their peers. It wouldnt take much to convince me to require FBS for DI basketball.
Why should any DI should be required to play X amount of sports mens and womens? Just participant in the ones you care about.
And I know my thoughts are not going to become reality.

Gonzaga, being an undeniable blueblood MBB program at this point, play their peers every March.
