The "2 hours from Lexington" isn't really a reason, but Marshall prior to the 1980s was a respectable basketball power.
Cam Henderson (who our arena is named after) was in inventor of the zone defense and fast break concepts. Our 1947 team was the NAIA national champion and produced the #1 overall pick in the second ever NBA draft. Our head coach (who coached football and basketball) even passed up going to a bowl game to take the basketball team to the Los Angeles Invitation, which we won beating Syracuse in the finals. When our Veteran's Memorial Fieldhouse opened, it was one of the largest basketball arenas in the midwest. We've produced one of the best basketball players in history, Hal Greer, who broke the athletic scholarship color barrier in our state.
We've been as high as #8 in the AP basketball poll, and during the playing days of the D'Antoni brothers were actually a regular of Madison Square Gardens. We made the NCAA Tournament three times in the 1980s, but an NCAA sanction plus the begin of Marshall's football dominance saw basketball fall on rough times. We had a nearly 30 year championship/NCAA postseason appearance drought until we won C-USA in 2018 and beat Wichita State in the round of 64. We've got our fair share of accomplishment - Bruce Morris has the longest shot ever made in a game, Keith Veney has the NCAA record for most 3-pointers in a game, etc...
On Feb. 7, 1985, Marshall's Bruce Morris launched the "Shot Herd Round the World" to set the unofficial record for the longest made shot in college basketball history.
On that memorable Thursday night, Morris grabbed the rebound off a blocked shot and heaved it downcourt as time expired in the first half. The shot sailed through the air and landed in the basket 89 feet and 10 inches later. The Herd would go on to defeat Appalachian State, 93-82.

I can’t figure out Sun Belt scheduling. We’re home tonight against CCU but travel to Marshall on Saturday? Someone help me out, are there travel partners at all?

There are no travel partners. This is not so bad. You will have a week where one game is in conference and the other is cross conference.

Multiple reasons:
1. 7 team divisions, so at least one team must have a cross division travel partner.
2. Distances between Western division schools. You have two schools in the West (AState and Texas State) who don't really have a viable travel partner because they are close to no one else.
3. The most viable scenario breaks up instate rivals as partners.
Nice fight from Coastal. You guys played hard and dove all over the court. You guys played it right fouling us over the last 90 seconds.
Im not even 100% sure it should have been a jump ball and it really shouldn't have come down to this, but that last foul call on the 3 pointer was BS. Im waiting for us to get a call like that :)
Enjoyable game even though we need to hit our freebies.
Sucks to have a Sold Out crowd against ODU Saturday. Oh wait..
Can’t wait. Glad we get to continue their rivalry in the Sun Belt, there’s been some barn burners over the years. If I’m not mistaken this will be the 27th meeting all time, both schools having 13 wins.

My feelings exactly. Fun game to watch BS ending but can’t blame CCU. They did what needed doing and we didn’t.

No they were not. They even let them get within 3 just to beat them down again.
This Marshall team is special. We need the 8 man rotation with fricks available to be really good. Anyone gets hurt and we are screwed. But other than that, the freshman continue to get better and more seasoned. Micah is becoming maybe the best freshman player in the country, Kinsey, and Taylor are among the best guard duo in the conference. That's enough vs most opponents but Curfman can take us to the next level nights when he is on, Conner is a great defender and can score here and there. Fricks is a good defender. And Obinna can score and defend well in spots. Marshall is what beats Marshall. The 2 belt games we lost, we didn't have Fricks, nor the energy or effort to win. If we bring it like we did vs USM tonight, who is going to beat us in the belt? If we bring that Georgia Southern energy, then anyone can beat us lol.
