It wasn’t silly. It was strategic. It has kept the absurdity of this system in the background while the AAC kept killing it. You know you’re over the target when you’re taking flak. He’s right.

It may have been strategic but this board made it silly........really really silly.

Message boards weren’t the target audience. They are full of narcissists that may think they are but they’re not

Anyone not associated with the AAC in any capacity thought it was silly too!

You miss McLeod already? I don't!
I'd take a commish that cares over Catatonic Judy any day.
People are talking about the AAC because of this. I'm fine with it being negative. Most of the people talking down on it are people who installed and perpetuated the BCS/Power5 System anyway.

Now that you're in I bet you don't think it's silly. But, making things silly is what message boards exist for. If not, I need to reexamine all my life choices going back to birth.

Screw them!
That’s exactly right. Anyone talking about any of the other 4 in any capacity what so ever in the national media? Mike has done an exemplary job given what he started with. They said the AAC was DOA when it emerged from the Big East drama and yet here we are with McMurphy flapping his gums about the AAC with a decade of them talking about the AAC behind us.
As a fan that has had to endure years of Judy in C-USA, Aresco is a genius. Dropping the Power6 campaign in favor of a campaign that focuses on the proven power of the AAC is a smart move.
The message doesn't have to be that the AAC is part of the "P" club. It just needs to be that based on the accomplishments of the AAC, we are unique and stand apart from the other non-autonomous conferences. This type of campaign sets the stage to claim Playoff6 status once the new playoff structure begins. All the AAC has to do is lock down a spot among the top 6 conference champs, which should be achievable.
Aresco is refreshing as opposed to the comatose C-USA commissioner. I like that a commissioner is fighting for his conference. Who cares what McMurphy and his ilk think or say!

Half of this interview is Aresco's soapbox against the "P5" branding.
As far as I know, the AAC is the only conference that actively puts marketing dollars in branding itself as a Power Conference.
Half the interview 'is' Aresco doing just that, because that's his job.
He's doing that because it's really only 'branding' (or how I like to call it, perception) that has relegated the AAC to second tier status the past few years. It's been pointed out by a number of people that the AAC has had as good of football as many as 3 'P5' conferences the past five years or so, so that's the biggest hurdle we face. Not the only one, mind you, but the biggest. And he made very clear that was the bullseye we were shooting at.
Single biggest reason I respect him as commissioner.

He’s right- there are 2 elite conferences now, the SEC and the B10. Everyone else is in the same bucket. The P5 label was made up anyway and plenty of teams and conferences that benefitted from the made up label did not deserve it.
The AAC champ will have a shot at the playoff and the biggest bowls moving forward. Hopefully they won’t stop at 12 and expand to 16 or more down the road like FCS. The money will be there if they do and they always follow the money no matter if it takes them forever to figure it out-
Remember when they said we would NEVER have a playoff in college football? That wasn’t that long ago-

Hope you are right about playoff expansion.

Especially when the AAC was truly above the rest of the G5 by a lot in performance and truly carved a niche more in line with P5 than G4.

He made a colossal error selling the BIG East name. It was a AQ brand , yes it lost that status in 2012, but it had been historically been associated with AQ status. The weakest of the AQ brands, but it was a brand.
Sold it to start an unknown G5 conference. Grave grave mistake.
The AAC will always have the the G5 monkey on its back, which is unfortunate.
That's true. At least the Big East had brand recognition and history behind it.
No, this is incorrect.
The 'Big East' name was only worth came from basketball and had become useless from a football perspective and that's the only sport that matters. The 'Big East' name would not help us get into a CFP game, so it had absolutely no use to us.
The only mistake was getting so little for it - it was worth far more than $10M to its original members but I suspect Aresco just wanted to be done with it, and I understand that.
