The thing about that quote from Saban is I can completely see him saying that.

However, it is only fair that Illinois face an opponent that is prepared and genuinely wants to participate.

If the MissState players and coaches are not in the proper frame of mind to undertake what will be a hugely difficult preparation and, as such, need to not play the bowl game ... would be fully understandable. This will be a monumentally tough decision for the MSU coaches and players.

The game is Jan. 2. So MSU will need to let ReliaQuest Bowl officials know soon. I've seen no media reports with details.

A sad day for the college football world. Leach seemed like a genuine person who was both liked and respected.

I don't think for a second that Mississippi St would bail on this.

Mississippi State will play the bowl game.

Of course they will. It was absolutely never a question.

Mike Leach achieved what we should all aspire to. I can't think of a better way to leave this life -- with all those you competed with lauding you, not for how often you won (though he won a lot), but for the truly important things in life which he did so well. And to go out as an organ donor is just icing on the cake. Well done.

Absolutely, skipping the best bowl game his MSU teams played their way into would have dishonored Coach Leach's memory. He probably would have haunted them all, and nobody wants to deal with a ghost pirate!

Yes, but not all at the some time. Holgorson came later.

I just realized that Leach was the OC for Tim Couch at Kentucky. That says it all to me. I mean he got Couch selected as the #1 in the draft… from Kentucky!! I don’t think people realize how BAD Kentucky was before Mumme/Leach.

RIP coach.

I think my favorite CFB story of all time was him telling the tale of the fake playbook dropped after pre-game warm-ups before OU/Texas.

Classic Leach.

Such sad news. He was a truly interesting guy. I highly recommend his book. All the many tributes show that he touched many, one sign of a life well lived.
