Too many mid-majors found a way to have a good RPI so they changed the metrics to make it more favorable to P6 conferences. NET replaced RPI a few years ago, although RPI is still tracked by some.

So far, NET has been pretty good..There are a lot, and I mean a lot of good mid majors this year.

My only complaint is Troy and Marshall should be ranked higher.

We just have to figure out how to best take advantage of the NET rankings. I'm not sure, but it seems to me that WINNING is the most important thing, therefore, winning OOC games is the most important for the SBC.

What’s hurting Marshall is that they’ve played 0 Quad 1 or Quad 2 games. You are 1-1 in Quad 3 games and then 6-0 on Quad 4 games. The Duquesne win will help you.

Troy’s schedule is a little better because they only have 2 Quad 4 games. They are 0-2 against Quad 1, 0-1 against Quad 2, 1-1 against Quad 3, and 2-0 against Quad 4. At least they’ve played some Quad 1 teams.

South’s schedule so far has been brutal and our lack of wins (even if losses were close) is evident. We are 0-5 against Quad 1 and 0-1 against Quad 2 with no Quad 3 games and 2-0 in Quad 4 games. South’s ranking will go down on Monday when we add another Quad 4 game. At least it’s on the road.

We could go through the first wave of conference play... Re-evaluate and go to pods at that point. It seemed to work for CUSA... It was the ONE thing that Jeepudy approved... and really, it was the board, not her.

Pod play should work on paper

However, as we found out in CUSA, in most years, it didn't help. Heck, in fact, many times it hurt.

I thought it was a good idea but everyone hated it if I remember correctly

Yeah, it's like market price. If your are mere pennies off, you fail. You have to have just the right combination of quality opponents and winning against said opponents instead of beating each other up.

Forgive me, I am thinking out loud tonight and posting and then re-evaluating....

RE: Current Top 5 A10 and SunBelt comparison
I'm not real familiar with the scheduling you guys are talking, but essentially the teams you play twice would be due to the rankings rather than geography and/or rivalries right? Something like that is right there with dropping football divisions to me. It takes some away from what makes sports, especially college sports and especially a conference like this, so great and so fun. But I can obviously understand the benefit and sometimes that benefit can outweigh the downside.

Personally I think we can get basketball to where we want it to be without having to screw with the tournament or take away from the fun of things like JMU always playing ODU twice a year. It's something to consider down the road if necessary, just like with divisions in football if it turns out to hurt us more often than I'd expect. I think we should have some patience before jumping to things like that though, especially considering the regional rivalries are such a huge appeal of the Sun Belt.
