OT Off-Season: US News SBC National Academic Rankings
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/ran...top-public

Most SBC schools fall into the "regional" academic rankings which is where a lot of schools end up that don't have enough PHD programs or research grants. Something along those lines. Congrats to the SBC schools that fell into the US News Public Schools National Rankings list and carry all of us academically.

Thank you to the East for your academic contributions!

1) JMU (#72 nationally) 77% acceptance, 84% graduation rate
2) GSU (#118 nationally, tied with ECU/WVU) 76% acceptance, 55% graduation rate

RE: OT Off-Season: US News SBC National Academic Rankings
There are some great podcasts about these rankings, Freakoconomics did a mini-series on the "prestige" rankings and what college is for.

Schools chase PHD programs because they are incentivized to do so versus carrying out their stated goals. The irony of folks in academia chasing a buck shouldn't be lost on anyone.

The UNC system has limited App's ability to add programs throughout the years, which is disappointing in some ways, but it has provided focus to make our undergraduate programs some of the best around.

According to the Google machine that never lies, it says you are R2.

*Update.... I just found another link that shows your correct designation, bad Google! Fixed.

Why do the Master's Level universities automatically go at the bottom here? Based on where JMU is here, and where they were two years ago as a Master's level school, I'd put App no worse than third, but probably second. Certainly not below all these schools with <55% graduation rates.

Admittedly, I know little to nothing about how these rankings are determined. It seems to be a multitude of reasons, not strictly acceptance rate, graduation rate, research level.... They're taking a multitude of reasons, and sometimes the margins are thin.

Does anyone else remember when NCAA football for PlayStation used to have star ratings for both its brand and academic status? I think it'd be neat to take a crack at it based on these and other factors.... Maybe I'll start a thread, maybe not...

App, Troy, and Coastal are regional colleges and are in a separate USNWR ranking from the national universities. Same reason y’all are not rated in Carnegie tiers because you don’t conduct PhD research on your campuses.

RE: OT Off-Season: US News SBC National Academic Rankings
App isn't a 12-14 just for being regional, they're going to be close to JMU at a national ranking. Research "R" ranking has nothing to do with the quality of education, it's based on the amount invested and number of PhD programs/degrees conferred.

This was JMU's first year nationally ranked and sorry to sound elitist but I'm not happy at all with how low we're ranked. There are schools that have been gaming the ranking system for decades so these are huge subjective swags at quality of education.

As 2nd tier publics in our home states, we are all charged with serving the student population a notch or two below our flagships so we're never going to compete with the Ivies.

There are other measures though. Forbes, for example, ranks with an emphasis on real-world metrics of the education being provided like cost of education, avg grad salaries, grad rates, etc. In their words "an excellent education at a great price, graduate high-earners and propel students to become successful entrepreneurs and influential leaders in their fields"

Below are the schools I could find, feel free to add more. These numbers are among all schools in the nation (public, private, liberal arts, etc).

139 James Madison University
301 Appalachian State University
367 Georgia State University
385 Texas State University
472 Old Dominion University

I actually thought JMU was generously ranked.

The research designation matters. I would have to think it's a component of their ranking system. However, like I said in an earlier post, it's just one factor in a multitude of factors.

Marshall has been steadily climbing these lists over the years. Regardless, you can pump out well educated students, but if they're not prepared for the work force, what good is it?

Well again, I'm not trying to disparage other schools. When I applied to schools 30 years ago, all the schools I applied to were on par with each other (JMU, Va Tech, Purdue, UConn, and Clemson). Maryland and just about all the Florida schools were a total joke to get in.

Over that time JMU doubled in size and with that growth came a big drop in exclusivity. BUT, the quality of education never dropped- just the GPA and test score averages of the larger applicant pool. I'm sure many of your schools have similar histories.

And yes, the preparedness of graduates for their chosen fields should be mission one for all schools.

I'll gladly take having the lowest acceptance rate over having the top ranked EDD or Multicultural Rainforest Studies programs.
