The ACC's Historic Performance under a 12 team CFP
Given the CFP's adoption of a 12 team format with the 6 highest ranked conference champions guaranteed bids, I thought it would be useful to look back at prior seasons to see how the ACC champion would have fared under this formula. Although there are a few close calls, I believe the ACC champ would have been invited every season since 1990. I haven't looked at results prior to that time.
Year ACC Champion (CFP/AP Rank/Rank among Conf Champs)
2022 Clemson (7/3)
2021 Pittsburgh (12/5)
2020 Clemson (2/1)
2019 Clemson (3/3)
2018 Clemson (2/2)
2017 Clemson (1/1)
2016 Clemson (2/2)
2015 Clemson (1/1)
2014 Florida St. (3/3)
2013 Florida St. (1/1)
2012 Florida St. (13/5)
2011 Clemson (14/5)
2010 Va. Tech (12/7) (Note: With conference consolidation, Va. Tech would have been the 6th ranked conference champ)
2009 Va. Tech (12/8) (Note: With conference consolidation, Va. Tech would have been the 6th ranked conference champ)
2008 Va. Tech (21/8) (Note: With conference consolidation, Va. Tech would have been the 6th ranked conference champ)
2007 Va. Tech (5/4)
2006 Wake Forest (15/7) (Note: Louisville was Big East champ, 5th in the AP poll and 3rd among conference champs)
2005 Florida St. (22/7) (Notes: With conference consolidation, Florida St. would have been the 5th ranked conference champ; With a single division format, #5 Va. Tech would have played #10 Miami in the ACC CCG)
2004 Va. Tech (9/6) (Note: Louisville was CUSA champ, 7th in the AP poll and 5th among conference champs)
2003 Florida St. (9/5)
2002 Florida St. (16/6) (Note: Miami was Big East champ, 1st in the AP poll and 1st among conference champs)
2001 Maryland (6/4) (Note: Miami was Big East champ, 1st in the AP poll and 1st among conference champs)
2000 Florida St. (3/3) (Note: Miami was Big East champ, 2nd in the AP poll and 2nd among conference champs)
1999 Florida St. (1/1)
1998 Florida St. (2/2)
1997 Florida St. (4/4)
1996 Florida St. (1/1)
1995 Florida St. (8/4) (Note: Florida St. and Virginia tied for the conference title. Virginia won the regular season game between the two, but Florida St. represented the ACC in the Orange Bowl presumably based on higher ranking; Va. Tech was the Big East champ, 13th in the AP, and 5th among conference champs)
1994 Florida St. (7/5) (Note: Miami was Big East champ, 3rd in the AP poll and 3rd among conference champs)
1993 Florida St. (1/1)
1992 Florida St. (3/3) (Note: Miami was Big East champ, 1st in the AP poll and 1st among conference champs)
1991 Clemson (13/7) (Note: Miami (1/1); Florida St. (5/NA); With conference consolidation, Clemson would have been 4th among conference champs)
1990 Ga. Tech (2/2)

Perhaps twice a decade will the 10th ranked team miss out due to 2 crappy P-6 champs.
Whereas the old system focused on sports 1-6 - the new system will focus on 1-12 with the higher ranked playing spoilers. That will cause the rankers to somewhat alter what they do. It means a league champion gets an almost automatic boost to the top 10 in order to eliminate controversy.

Based on my review of the polls post conference championship Saturday, I came up with the following list of likely second or third invitees (with their CFP or AP ranking in parentheses).
