This.

My guess he goes to a P5 and will be a back-up but they have the money to pay for him to be.

I do think that if we had the same type of year as last year I think a player like Waylee stays. The rest that have left I doubt.

RE: Jumping Ship
Before we lose our minds let’s just look at this logically, Waylee likely wants all the carrys. He was behind brown…and a freshman for some reason…

Total fine with him seeking the ball and game

No other transfer even bugs me. What is all this weird ass gloom and doom about transfers? Literally most of the transfers will drop down a level, no loss. The NCAA didn’t hurt anyone.

If anything it will help this season, I mean if Hammock isn’t terrible at his job with a weird obsession with safety and no desire to have any linebackers and corners.

I don’t want to hear any NCAA crap, not their fault hammock sucked at his job. His recruit didn’t pan out for one reason or another, and now he has to fix his mistakes with a tool that is out there - the portal.

If he fails to do so he should be fired. The program will have been worse than he found it and he needs to go away. If he fixes it, we can all say good for him! Way to fill in that hole you dug, not just don’t do it again.

RE: Jumping Ship
Every season of transferring is independent from the others. I don't believe it's an indication of the program's status. Some seasons you will win. Some you will lose. Buffalo had 22 kids transfer out last year. 22! With a win over Akron today they're bowl eligible.

We don't know why kids transfer. But we jump to the conclusion that it's a sign of dysfunction. And in some cases it may be....Gandy and Rogers for example. Yeah, I'd wanna leave too if I played in this defense. I imagine Corey Crooms is leaving WMU bc they have no QB there. This is gonna happen everywhere to every team. But the other transfers we have? Cox graduated. Him leaving is probably education related. Waylee wants out of a committee backfield most likely. Most transfers are going for standard personal reasons. There's no panic button to push right now other than D-coordinator.

If Ducker didn't stay after that year, why would Waylee stay after a similar year?

He's running out of time and trying to cash in on whatever success he had this year and whatever potential he still can convince another coach he may have.

Wow, one of the very few players with speed on offense who couod break big plays open. He will be surely missed.

Waylee and Brown combo was a good one with lightening and thunder.

Where is that even a possibility?

College programs have running backs (plural) not just one horse. Plus, unless he wants to drop down a level, he's not going to go somewhere where he's the top dog.

We can't replace all these experienced transfers and graduates with more high school freshmen. Otherwise this team will perpetually be young and Hammock will always have any excuse of my experienced players transfer and we are young.

He needs to replace all these transfers with FBS transfers who have already been built up, developed, and now want playing time.

NIU was a top tier team for depth at RB before this no wait transfer. While it got NIU a Rocky, it's costing them in RB. Ducker wanted to be the front man the same way AL...tOSU guys do on loaded teams so they transfer.

I hardly think any of the transfers are because Hammock or "NIU football sucks" bs. Most guys, at least top level, don't have to play for the good guy or education. They want money and possibility at next level. Go somewhere you think you can start, get or perhaps even promised NIL money. Before the unlimited transfer guys fulfilled their scholarships and moved on for one reason or another. Now, those reasons from missing home, mom wanting to see girls in bikini's take even more center stage when given the opportunity.

I thought this would be bad for NIU and I think it's going to get worse, or at least not get much better. It has evened the field in that more one year wonders will come to be, perhaps as NIU was last year. You many lose a stud, get lucky with a stud transfer in. The transfer any time does and NIL money can make a difference there.

College sport have changed forever and perhaps for the worst for NIU football.

That will be how rosters are both emptied and filled going forward. Instead of recruiting out of high schools, schools will recruit out of the portal. The days of growing your own four-year kid are pretty much gone. Pretty soon they will have reduced recruiting to a tinder app where you could swipe left or right on recruits. Whether that’s actually bad or not? Who knows. Need to see how recruiting market adjusts.

Regarding roster turnover, remember that between 25 and 40 guys leave every team, every year, so the number is not that big a deal. The difference is that number now includes some starters when it usually did not in the past.

Yep.
Outside QB position, we have done better with FCS players than FBS players. Gil Brandt always said, he'd watch the players moving up and not moving down.

How many kids are there nation wide?

131 teams with about 120 players. So 15,720 total players and 800 in the portal. Meaning 5% transferring out. That doesn't seem so bad. I mean, it sucks because I miss the days of players riding it out with their teams and playing bowl games. But those days are over...

NO, it’s not 800 in the portal……it is 800 joining the portal TODAY.

The total in the portal far exceeds 800.

And of those 120 players, 20+ are incoming true freshman who probably aren’t going to go into the portal and maybe another 5 or so who are seniors that are graduating or moving on from football.

Allow me to repeat: "entering the portal now has nothing to do with (one's team) being bad or good. It is simply a by-product of today's players believing they deserve more playing time or the grass is greener elsewhere."
