For the Haters of the Media Relations Office
For those that continue to think the EMU media relations office doesn't do enough, it seems the national SID organization believes otherwise.

https://emueagles.com/news/2022/11/30/ge...er-30.aspx

It should also be noted that a former EMU graduate assistant (Maddie Heaps, Stanford) and EMU student-athlete and media relations student-worker (Nicole Remedios, Illinois Wesleyan) were also granted the honor. No other school in the Mid-American Conference had an honoree.

The majority of what that office does is never seen by those of us sitting at home. The reason the broadcasts have been giving our student-athletes more shine in these MACtion games? Because they work their behinds off and tell the stories of the student-athletes to the people with the mouthpieces.

They are the class of the MAC.

EMU has an excellent media relations office.

I have some issues with the broadcast teams, though not FB, but what comes out of media relations is excellent.

Sounds crazy, but at times I think they do TOO much. Maybe it is just me, but I feel 'information overload' and there is too much but it is part of the times when we live where it is so easy for many, many media to put out so much on all subjects.

ok, easy, easy Demiggs. you win. man, this is a weird way to celebrate what you're so proud of by acting triggered and angry.

I'm not a fan of our media relations team at times as I don't think the info is creative or consistent throughout the year. With that being said, I reached out on Twitter and said congrats to Alex. I do think he brings good energy and effort despite my opinions.

Congrats to Alex and his team.

Nobody's hating, just want more pre and post game content. Example: The big win over Arizona State, should have been a big EMU victory lap and all I read and saw was the ASU perspective and how Herm Edwards sucked and should get fired.

Bingo Bob! I'm sure they are good people and while I don't think they do a terrible job, I just don't think they are that good.

Perfect example.....releasing football player interviews all at the same time halfway through the season. LOL.

God love em congrats again to Alex.

What we’ve learned in this thread is that media relations spends a lot of time reading this board and gets rustled rather easily.

Actually, a **FORMER** member of the Media Relations office (which I've mentioned before) that has spent YEARS reading this board and finally decided to say something. There isn't enough time in the day for the people of that office to get on and read what this board has to say.

As someone who has spent the hours that office puts in, it does "rustle" me when people think and react like they know what the job entails when in reality they only see what's on the surface.

They're great at their jobs. They train others up to be great in the business as well.

Is the department perfect? Of course not. But I challenge you to find ANY of our peers across the MAC that do it better.

Easy, easy, easy Demi. You win. Everyone back off.

The media relations team at EMU is the best we have ever seen and no one can understand the hours and all the hard work they put in. The player interviews showing their background before they got to EMU, all of the interviews during the season with offensive and defensive coordinators, the interviews with bowl game commissioners, opposing player interviews, hard hitting questions, effort to get the teams on local news channels before games is clearly demonstrated. It cannot be comprehended the work they do. We should be appreciative.

I gave you a concrete example of what everyone here is looking for. I was on a high after we took ASU behind the wood shed and I wanted to revel in that victory a little longer and I didn't get much. I will say that the cinematic presentation of the team in Tempe-- pregame and the game highlights was really cool, very reminiscent of NFL Films. I love everything those guys do, we all just want more because everyone here is a hardcore alum/fan of Eastern Michigan University! Keep up the good work.

RE: For the Haters of the Media Relations Office
I love what we do have and believe our media teams do an excellent job!!

However, as a whole, the MAC conference has decided to grow our football image but I believe fumbled the ball. For example, like Bob said after we beat ASU, EMU didn’t ride the “Hey world, look what EMU just accomplished” because there’s limited budget. Every MAC school should be told that 1) A weekly coaches show should be held with football and basketball coaches. 2) After every football and basketball game, we should have a minimum 30 minute pre game and postgame analysis and evaluation of the game. When I listen to 89.1 as soon as the last whistle is blown, the announcers go off the air within a minute or two. What would it cost to have our play by play guy discuss the game for 30 minutes? I loved the on the field post game videos made after we beat CMU!! Those videos were awesome and limited expense posting them on YouTube. I would love to get pre and post game thoughts of our basketball team but it’s like 2 minutes worth. One huge reason why you see 100000s of Walmart fans with butts in the UofM stadium is because the fans feel they have a relationship with the players because they’re on so much media (TV and radio). While I understand we won’t get the same tv and radio exposure as UofM, we’ve got to keep increasing exposure of our athletes using free media outlets like YouTube. I want to see video highlights of games….especially of Noah and Emoni. Ride this train hard while we’ve got two great players. I’m busy at work and didn’t have time to write a more organized post. In summary I love what we have just wish we had a) post game shows and b) more use of free media outlets like YouTube.

Great points...I remember growing up, Every Sunday morning I watched "Michigan Replay" a half hour show recapping the U-M game with Bo Schembechler and Jim Brandstatter. There is no reason we couldn't have a weekly show on youtube every Sunday with Chris Creighton and say, TJ Lang. That would be beyond awesome and it would it would pay dividends, guaranteed.

Good Lord. If anyone follows the athletic social media channels, there's plenty of content out there. Pre game hype videos, post game highlights, practice summaries, etc. All of which are produced very well, and posted very frequently.

Between this and the weekly podcast, I think they do an awesome job, better than most of our MAC peers.

Agree, 100%. Our media relations office is very productive.

Agree Bob - a coaches show on YouTube is the low hanging fruit that would grow our exposure. It would be very easy for other’s interested in EMU football/basketball to search on YouTube vs searching on podcasts.

I'm not a big fan of going over board on marketing. Yes, I had marketing courses at Wayne State as a bus ad student.

First, there is a BIG difference between marketing tooth paste and a sports team, college or pro.

Second, it is easy to spend money on marketing and lose money if the marginal cost per unit of the product (marginal marketing cost) exceeds the profit on the additional units of products sold. I don't know if Tom's of Maine tooth paste is better than Crest or whatever, and that is where marketing tries to convince the customer. Ditto is a Honda Accord better than a Toyota Camry? Marketers will try to persuade.

Getting back to sports...

The Lions were dogs last year. Attendance cratered. This year after a bad start Lions won 3 straight games. Scalpers were selling tickets for $700 I read in the upper deck for Thanksgiving for the Bills.

What does that suggest?

In SPORTS, fans don't need marketing to tell them that a product on the field, court, rink, etc, is good. IF it is good, they know it. And if it is bad (like the 1st half Wednesday), we ALL knew it. NO sugar coating or gaslighting. We see what we see and make judgement accordingly.

And, of course, the big increase in ticket sales for EMU MBB had nothing to do with marketing. It was the perception that the PRODUCT was going to be much better, much more exciting, etc. etc. because of Emoni. As they might say, "Watching Emoni is worth the price of admission."

Some people love to market, market, market... BUT don't distinguish between product that the customer knows nothing (say a furnace filter) and what the customer can obviously discern for him or herself. Certain products sell themselves. Telsla vehicles are one. They are the big dog in EV. Alabama FB. Duke MBB. They are big dogs in their markets.

BTW, a 10-minute pre-game for MBB is fine. What is the injury status of the team? What to look to for the opponent? And not a lot of fluff.

I guess from a Media Relations perspective, the customer is always wrong? People make a few suggestions, and everyone freaks out?
