All coaches are mercenaries. Except maybe in basketball, Hardaway, Howard and Stackhouse.
As they should be, it’s business.
I didn't say it wasn't.

With the 12-team playoff continuing to be recognized as the top G5 will be very important, USF getting Deion, FAU with Herman, and Tulane keeping Fritz help with that.
You forgot Trent Dilfer at UAB.

All of us are to some extent. I leave jobs for more money / promotions / both. That is life.
Some people don't mind burning everything down on their way out the door as long as they get what is good for them, others take their fiduciary responsibility seriously and try to leave on good terms.
Lifetime loyalty is too much to ask, but acting responsibly on your way out the door is a reasonable expectation.

I’m ok with USF waiting for Deion and going elsewhere if he goes somewhere else. I think there are other good options as you mentioned. I like Manny Diaz and there are others. The Troy coach has been impressive in his first year. It will be interesting to see how all the new coaches @ctually do vs expectations at hiring. USF has been burned before hiring big expectations

Agree^, Stand pat for a few days. If no go then you go shopping again. There are other good coaches out there. Some few ever heard of, just got to find that diamond in the rough.

I agree, Manny Diaz would be a great hire. Recruits the state well, and I think he was getting U of M going on the right track before getting fired.

Man...
Holtz... Inherited solid program (rare for a new coach) and pissed it away...
Taggart... Brought in NFL talent but couldn't go all the way
Strong... Literally tore it all down and burned it
Scott... Was just in waaaaay over his head and blew it completely...
I mean each of these guys was supposed to be 'the one'... Program just cursed I guess...

Agree but our administration didn’t help matters. Holtz was handicapped by the Academic Committee. Strong also was not given the support he wanted. No surprise Deion is asking for complete control over football operations, pretty sure he has heard about our past. Thankfully we have a new administration and for the first time is pro athletics from top to bottom.

I heard USF is already offering him 5 mill a year. No state taxes in Florida plus no snow and better recruiting grounds. If Colorado is upping their hand it says a lot where they stand

At this point it seems he is just playing one against the other, to get the best dollars. Perfectly fine... that's just business. If it comes down to money, he will go to Colorado. Our only chance is if we gave 'enough' to make it respectable (perhaps 5m), and he valued things like best stepping stone school, where he could win easiest, Florida locale, etc. Feels like he is heading to the rocky mountains though...

Can USF actually afford 5 million a year plus whatever his assistants would cost? Seems unlikely given that y'all are also paying a buyout to another coach and trying to build a stadium.

The fact that CU was an elite program when he was in college, and he can say “I brought them back to that” would be a strong factor I would think (no I don’t think he can actually do that for CU).

Exactly, where would USF get 5M plus good assistants and build a stadium? C’mon man.

I heard that big boosters had stepped up for the 5 million a year for HC, Deion wanted 5 million for assistants, I believe we were offering 4 million there. From what I hear that was the offer.
