UAB to hire Trent Dilfer as Head Football Coach.
Super Bowl winning QB, currently coaches the #15 ranked nationally HS team in Nashville They play for their third straight championship Thursday, press conference Friday.

Definitely an outside the box hire, but the more I think about it the better I like it.

I'm all in baby, this is exactly what I was wanting. Take a chance, I'm so damn tired of 8/9 win seasons, beating up on bad teams, and no significant OOC wins. Not to mention, the scheme was boring (run the ball, play defense). This hire has a chance to be a huge homerun, or a disaster. Gotta take a chance to reach new heights.

He's a lot better than some of the names floated. We can get him pretty cheap, he's a Super Bowl winning QB with ties to both ESPN and Fox. He runs an elite QB camp.

Our AD kept the search very quiet. We were terrified we'd get stuck with a retread. This is a roll of the dice, sure, but we've been stuck with far worse choices before. We'll see how the team responds soon.

He will have to run a football program. Does he have experience running anything outside of being a QB.... even a company?

uc signed dilfer's stud, high school qb last spring. he quit the 'cats in summer camp, because he wasn't going to be QB1 - name of luther riechisson (I know i misspelled the last name) - guessing you guys will have a new QB1 for next year!!

I did some research. Dilfer has apparently amassed a 43-10 record at the high school level, including a 12-0 record this year. He has four years high school coaching experience. None at the college level.

And I thought Biff was an unusual hire. The new AAC schools are full of surprises. Next up FAU. What will their move be?

Coaching high school is nothing like running a FBS football program. In high-school, you are essentially an employee that has a pool of students handed to him to make a team. You really do not have much control over many aspects of the admin side of the team.

In FBS, you have staff that you are managing, top to bottom, many making 6 figures.

I like this hire.

Navy has UAB in 2023 in the scheduling rotation.

I follow Lipscomb Academy high school football. Dilfer restored and then elevated Lipscomb's football program to new heights. He did it through utilizing funds liberally dispensed (e.g., nice indoor practice facility and free scholarships and perhaps other legal perks) and luring players with his NFL pedigree and elite level coaching staff.

In other words, he had the resources of an Alabama and not an UAB.

I am skeptical, but hope to be proven wrong.

Is this the first time a high school coach went directly to the AAC?

Standards have seemingly changed overnight in this conference.

The incumbent programs are really screwing over the new programs with this unequal payout. USF is offering Deion Sanders (apparently in a bidding war with Colorado) and UAB is offering high school coaches just shows the financial imbalance.

Because he is a high school coach use to winning at the high school level with massive resources......

He has to demonstrate he has the ability to sign elite level or at least competitive level players and it is not evident yet.

This screams boom or bust to me. Give me a Head coach like Fritz or Houston who have worked at every level and won. I can’t say that I am not intrigued by this one

03-puke

EWW! That's an awful factoid.

Bob Commings (Iowa, 1974), went 18–37 never a winning season
Gerry Faust (Notre Dame, 1981), went 30–26–1 and his best team was 7-5
Todd Dodge (North Texas, 2007) went 6–37 never a winning season
Tony Sanchez (UNLV, 2015) went 20–40 never a winning season

I don’t think you can correctly assume that the unequal distribution of funds has anything to do with either the Dilfer hire or the potential of Coach Prime being the new coach at USF.

UAB has been a difficult place to win for the vast majority of it’s life as a football program. It’s entirely possible that the current coaches in the college ranks were not that impressive or were not interested. It’s also possible that Dilfer pursued the job and won them over in the interview.

As for Prime, I betcha that a bunch of local businesses are salivating at the thought of what he will bring to the community. The dude can not only coach and recruit; he can sell his ass off. He’ll generate more buzz in the market, bring in tons of NIL money and will make whatever investment they make worth it in all likelihood.

Not trying to flame, but who would you rather have recruiting players for you? Gus or Prime? Throw in the NIL money he’ll generate and it’s a no-brainer.

On that note, if USF can pull this off I predict that they’ll be in an Access Bowl within 4 seasons. I should also add that USF should be easier for him to recruit to than Colorado would be and that he would be a much better fit in Tampa than he would be in Boulder.
