Yeah good luck with that. Liberals don't give up power easily, it takes more than a vote.

Provinces in Canada have more power constitutionally than USA states, including potentially the power to secede. This could very well be the precursor to a secession movement. Alberta as the 51st state, anyone?

I'd love to be able to travel to Alberta without needing a passport. That place is God's country.

More power to them -- so to speak.

But if they're tired of federal overreach I'm not sure why they would be interested in becoming a U.S. state. Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

keep it at 50 trade 'em half of California for all of Alberta. Oil, gas, cowboys and 2 hockey teams. Would be a good trade. let cali die a scoialiist death, and watch all the companies flee when they realize taxes and personal compensation taxes will go through the roof. Without the crazy Leftists in California, plus Alberta, country swings back frimly center-right, where it should be.

Oh, and tell 'em no more water from Colorado river basin. Sorry, Cali.

RE: Meanwhile in Alberta
Sounds like largely pointless pandering to the right. Alberta, like the other provinces and territories of Canada, can already sue the federal government if they believe that federal legislation and/or actions are contrary to the Canadian constitution. And the posted articles make clear that the government of Alberta recognizes they will still have to accept court rulings that may or may not go in their favor, should they invoke this new act. It's just designed to get a bunch of attention for Premier Smith and her party from the MAGA crowd (Make Alberta Great Again, in this case) when they "stand up to" the federal government with their shiny new toy...which they don't need to push back if Ottawa oversteps its bounds.

RE: Meanwhile in Alberta
Here's the problem that Alberta faces. Ontario and Quebec dominate Parliament because of population. Ottawa subsidizes the heck out of Quebec to keep it from bolting, and the Maritimes to keep them from third world status. Money from the rest of Canada keeps Quebec and the Maritimes afloat economically. To quote Peter Zeihan at https://zeihan.com/i-think-they-get-it-n...t-canada/:

"[Ontario and Quebec] have decided the solution is to jack up taxes on the remaining provinces to make up the difference. But citizens of the Maritimes and British Colombia are as old or older than the Quebecois and Ontarians. That leaves the tax burden on the Prairies, most notably on Alberta and Saskatchewan. In The Accidental Superpower I included a chapter titled “The Alberta Question” in which I detailed at length how the disconnects between Alberta and the rest of Canada threatened the country’s national coherence. I stand by that assessment, but now I see something more ominous."

Basically, Alberta sends something on the order of C$20,000 per capita per year east to support Quebec and the Maritimes. Albertans are tired of it.

Only if Vancouver to Surrey BC is given to Washington.

I don't think that people realize that 2/3 of the BC legislature are members of parties to the left of Trudeau's Liberal Party. BC puts Oregon, Washington, and California to shame.

But BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba combined would have fewer representatives than California.

On top of that, there is a 150 year old compromise on the Senate which results in Quebec and the maritimes significantly over-represented by population and number of provinces and the western provinces significantly under-represented.

Still a net win. Same number of senators and Florida and Texas gain reps. Useless discussion though.
