RE: Upcoming Drexel games on National TV
what options should they be looking at beyond espn or flo? i've always thought of them as being similar although of course espn+ has more college and pro sports people might be more familiar with. i've never bought into the idea though that going to espn+ will suddenly get thousands or even hundreds more eye balls. it's going to be a hardcore basketball fan that goes hunting for caa basketball...which brings us to other promotion, cost, etc. issues with the caa and the big 5 that might even be more important.

hopefully we can all agree that streaming sucks...period. when you're somebody like me that doesn't watch just 1 sport and sports from other countries or your local redneck dirt track...it gets expensive to watch them all. then again...i never had those options 10-15 years ago which is why my bar is set lower for streaming services than most people.

the answer in the past was to put together a tv channel or at least get it onto a tv channel like espn, nbcsn, or whatever. nobody wants to get cable anymore and it's understandable because there's so much crap on it. as i'm typing this...maybe it turns out all these streaming services band together and then you can pick/choose what you want after paying a flat fee. sort of like instead of buying the whole cd or cassette (really dating myself there)...these days you can go on itunes and just buy the song you want. it's $1.25 instead of $15+ dollars. maybe cable companies survive by bundling even across companies...like bringing disney together with netflix or flo.

the model needs to adapt especially as essentially every league i can think of is holding their sport hostage on a streaming services so fans have to buy it. nascar started with peacock this year. nobody can afford all of them and ultimately people will give up and get pissed off at the sport they used to love watching.

This thread got way more interesting. Thanks Metsox for the perspective. Interesting stuff.

To me, you gotta think of the different audiences and which ones your program/university sees as important.

Like, there's hardcore Drexel/CAA fans. They're gonna tune in -- and maybe even pay -- no matter where the games stream.

Then there's casual college hoops fans. This is where I see the anti-Flo sentiment is strongest. I am the kind of person who will go on ESPN+ and just see who's playing, in any league anywhere in the country. Flo is incredibly weak here. I don't know if this is a big or important market. But it exists.

Then there's the casual sports fan. And this is where the regional sports networks come in. You gotta be on linear TV if want to catch those local fans who will watch any Philly team. (There are certainly national versions of these people too, but let's be honest: they're not tuning into CAA basketball unless there's literally nothing else on.) If being on Flo means Drexel can afford more games on NBCSP, then maybe it makes sense to stick with Flo.

I don't pretend to know which of these are the most important to any university administrators.

I really like how you broke that down and is ultimately all I’m asking for…a fair assessment of the options. Hammering the league at every turn for being too cheap isn’t fair in my opinion and doesn’t open the door for dialogue. You call me too cheap and I’m going to tell you to go f yourself.

Speaking of being too cheap…people running these sports are probably thinking fans are too cheap. I could just fork over another $10 a month for ESPN+ like people could spend another $12 for Flo per month (correct me if i’m wrong on those numbers). I’m sure for some…not all..,their anger about Flo is they don’t already have it. This is where the streaming idea in general is potentially killing sports. It’s not Flo specifically. It’s like leagues don’t think we watch multiple other sports or want us to just watch their sport.

Linear TV is what we all want and need. Those days are fading. How will streaming sports play out with more people leaving cable for Apple TV, YoitubeTB, etc? That remains to be seen.

I think this might partially answer your last question. We are close to seeing the two world combine in Philadelphia. The word is getting out that you will soon be able to stream NBC Sports Philadelphia with a Peacock subscription. I don't know any details yet. But one of the reasons why many kept their cable subscription is to watch sports, especially local sports in Philadelphia. Now, if you have a Peacock subscription, you'll soon be able to watch in market Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, select Drexel games without a cable subscription.

Great discussion yall have going on about this topic

I agree with your sentiment that there is no excuse that we don't take advantage of our market status. Our radio partner owns an independent TV station in desperate need of programming.

I don't know about Charleston but I think the philosophy at UNCW is so engrained to being the only game in town they expect the people and the coverage will come due to no other options.

I also think UNCW likes the money from Flo and has the mindset the 1980's mindset that putting games on local TV will hurt the gate.

For those living under a rock or just paying attention to national media so you never heard about it, CAA has extended FLO as expected. Football will be exclusively on FLO and basketball is going to have more CBSSN games.

RE: Upcoming Drexel games on National TV
I think the most important part of the deal is "retaining the rights for local linear television distribution.". The CAA should require each school to air at least 4 of their games on local TV.

Schools taking advantage of local linear television..
Drexel
Delaware
Stony Brook
Monmouth
Towson
William & Mary
Northeastern

Schools that are not taking advantage
Charleston
Elon
NC A&T
UNCW
Hampton
Hofstra

Dwindling importance. CAA can't force anything or wont. Also it mentions about upgrades in broadcasts. Curious what that really means or if its merely a "we will spend a tiny bit more while asking schools to do better"
