Giving Tuesday
I'm up to already FIVE email requests from EMU.

One from EMU Foundation and one each from MBB, WBB, FB, and baseball.

Thank heavens I never donated to volleyball, rowing, etc. or my email cup would be running over.

It seems with charities that they get an email address and just 'blast away.' If someone has had several email accounts over the years, you are not ONE person, but multiple email addresses and treated according.

One of the first thing I learned in computer work (decades ago) is how to get unduplicated counts, unduplicated records, etc.

E.g., a hospital might want to know the number of unique inpatients treated in a year for say lung cancer. Maybe each hospitalization is a record. Literally records were sorted and each new patient with a lung cancer diagnosis was treated separately regardless of one or 10 admissions. That one patient wasn't counted 10 times.

I am in the middle of the #GivingTuesday appeal for the non-profit for whom I work. In developing our email list for promoting the appeal I spent a good deal of time removing duplicates and ensuring those who have asked to be unsubscribed are. You should reach out to Bill Shephard and share your thoughts. I'm guessing in order to maximize the effectiveness of the appeals, the Foundation gave lists to each of their development areas assuming donors are most likely to give where they've given before (a solid assumption) but didn't consider that people like you who support broad areas at the University might be on multiple lists.

I hear you.

The only problem FOUR of the requests are from programs within EMU athletics.

Seems like all of the were sent: EMU Foundation, EMU athletics (program A, program B, etc.).

I would much prefer one from EMU Foundation for any broad appeal and one from EMU athletics and let me decide to which programs I wish to donate.

That would require attention to detail by Dan McLean and his office. My experience with him has shown that that is not a tool in his toolbox.

I'll also add: a few years ago we would get calls to thank us after donating. Now we get a "personalized" email saying thanks that I'm certain are carbon copies sent to everyone. I've dropped my contributions significantly and started donating to other causes that seem to actually appreciate my donation.

RE: Giving Tuesday
Quite frankly we have a problem with our 'giving model.'

Decades ago, many decades ago, the United Way program was set up to centralize giving. "Give once, for all." motto. The federal government has their CFC, Combined Federal Campaign.

Very common to see employees donate say 1 or 2% of their salary to the charities of their choice.

HOWEVER, these same people get solicited again and again by these same charities and every charity under the sun.

It isn't unusual for me to receive some days two or three mail request for charitable donation. I see a bunch of "Annual Appeals."

It is a known fact in the fundraising industry that those who are philanthropically inclined tend to support more than one worthy cause. The trick for any nonprofit is to be deemed worthy. How you achieve that is the subject of debate. If you are a church or a school, you have a built-in constituency that you focus your efforts on. If you are a hospital, grateful patients, their families, and the super wealthy with big egos who like to see their name on things are your targets. If you are a smaller independent non-profit, newsletters and mailings build your constituency. And if you are the ASPCA you rely on Sara McLaughlin tunes to tug at the heartstrings of TV audiences.

True, McLean and EMU have stepped up their game recently. I have gotten calls from DJ Ballard and Tariq Speights. I know I have posted one of the videos before, but I thought I would add the birthday video as well. EMU does appreciate your financial support and I do too.

I agree, Jerry. I've gotten b-day greetings, etc.

I've never felt unappreciated. Actually very appreciated. During summer of 2021 I got an escorted tour of the SAPC. Met some of our then seniors, esp. our TE corp.

Glad I wasn't on the hook for 4 lockers. 03-lmfao

Yes, we probably do as we are old guys with fatter bank accounts. I also leverage my company's matching gift program to the maximum. It is no coincidence that I donate to that matching donation limit on an annual basis.

That said, make no mistake about it, Steve and I are NOT contributing to the Bruce Halle level either. Do not expect our names on any EMU building EVER!

I'm not going to disparage the amount of your contribution, but I will thank you deeply for any donation you make. I played golf with an EMU grad last month and he donates $100 every year. I thanked him, can you imagine what EMU would be if just 50% of our alumni kicked back that amount annually?

I can deny, unequivocally, that I am deep pockets.

I've donated for 30 years. I did do a 5-figure gift for SAPC. Some people did 6 or 7 figures, but until I win the lottery ain't me.

Five figures are far beyond my personal largesse. I salute you! I make it there ONLY with the help of my employer.

You guys must donate at a higher level than I do!

Well, yours is the first Thank You I've gotten that wasn't an automated email, so I thank you for that!

I love giving to Eastern and feeling like I'm a small part of what they've got going on. I hope my kids end up going there here in a few years (if they decide college is for them). Whether they do or don't, I love seeing improvements for the next generation of student.

RE: Giving Tuesday
Dear Friends,
A thank you to all on this site for donating to Eastern. Remember that Eastern was mainly a teacher's college for a hundred years. Now that our school has expanded programs into professions that earn higher salaries, hopefully, donations will increase in size as well.
