The Michigan game gave us a glimpse of how good EMU can be when both both Noah and Emoni are scoring well. Now Acuff and Rice are contributing as well.

Acuff found his consistently shooting in later games, and Rice who was hot at the end of last season, is being given minutes, allowing the EMU to ride it's hot hand. When Pranger return from his injury, EMU should be even stronger.

Good to see Bates playing some in the front court. Want to see more of that.

If EMU is to continue to win, other players will need to accept their roles. Lovejoy and Getter need to work on reducing their penchant for committing fouls.

EMU just beat a top 200 team and will play a top 100 team at home this Sunday afternoon. Hopefully, we'll see a second straight EMU win.

Agree.

If Emoni and Noah are firing on all cylinders and if we can get a running game going (#EasyBuckets) we'll do very well. OR if two of the big three (Emoni, Noah and Tyson) are 'on.' we can win. Of course, not every player is 'on' every night. All sports fans should know that. Shooters can score 20 points one night and eight the next.

So far we look like a team, when hot, can upset a real good team, and then lose to a dog when we can't make shots.

We can't win an ugly half court game. We can't defend a Hunter Dickinson or even a 2nd team all-MAC center.

Our team is built to run and get transition buckets and open threes. And try to speed up the opponent.

As you correctly point-out EMU's four scorers are not going to be on each night. But hopefully, Emoni and Noah wil
remain the focus of EMU's offense. Each has to smart and defer to the others when their not. Occasionally, a player like Golson will be in the mix.

As for maintaining continued interest in EMU bb, one needs to acknowledge that the college bb landscape is changing each season with new recruits and transfers both coming in and leaving, and alumni and students need to look at their teams far differently than the did the past. As no longer are players likely to remain for fours for a variety of reasons.

Fans should still remain engaged as talented EMU players are displaying their exceptional skills each night, and are interesting, entertaining, and fun to watch. Moreover, with EMU changing to more up-tempo game, racking up wins may well be on the horizon.

I'll repeat what we've been basically nibbling at.

This could be one of Stan's TOUGHEST coaching years. Why? Stan has as much talent at the 3 perimeter positions as any mid-major in the country but he doesn't have horses inside.

This means that expectations are going to be really high, but may not be fulfilled because of the holes in the roster.

(Detroit Lions' fans may note that we've had injuries at the guard positions and have paid the price. If the OT and center are really good, but there are problems, due to injury inside, then the other team just exploits that weakness. I think one guard gave up 10 QB pressures in one game).

Opponents know how to exploit EMU. On offense, exploit our front court. Our PF and center are not big. Emoni is rail thin. Just pound it inside and run up the 'in the paint' stats with an ugly half court game. Force us to foul inside.

On defense, try to avoid long rebounds or any thing which would allow EMU to run. In the open court, some of our players are very, very hard to stop. Try to make EMU play ISO ball and force players like Emoni and Noah to take difficult shots. If they let Emoni, et al to camp behind the arc and shot 40%, they are toast. (for Miggy, my expected value explanation: Take 10 treys and make 4. That equals 12 points, which is like shooting 60% on 2-point shots. Shooting 40% behind the arc or 60% on 2-points is a winner!!).

One of the 'joys' of college hoops is the "puncher's chance." A big underdog shots 3s like crazy and "can't miss." They take 30 and make 15 and may beat a good team shooting 60% from the field.

BTW, EMU will beat someone they shouldn't if they bomb away and make 50 - 55% of their 3s. Always happens in March Madness.

No one going to beat EMU inside if EMU defender is by the rim
and doesn't foul. Michigan wouldn't have with Dickinson because EMU interior defenders strayed away from the rim and repeatedly fouled him. Players have to be taught not to foul. Can be done. Players have to believe that any shot not by the rim Is a bad shot and therefore there's no reason to foul. No reason for EMU's guards to foul as well. They do so excessively. Not smart bb.

All Noah and Emoni need to do is go slow and shoot when they find open space or go to the rim. Both good three point shooters as is Rice. Acuff good last season, but inconsistent so far this season.

I’m calling this out. If you are only 18 and playing D1 ball and averaging 20.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg, then you are a lottery pick. Period.

FIU shot 1-15 on three-pointers and still scored 68-points. Hope ENU makes a concerted effort on Sunday to shut-down thee three-ball. Will need to do so to win.

I tend to agree. That said, I do wish Emoni would stay a 2nd year and work on his game and strength and weight.

Nothing like being drafted at age 20, not hardly ancient, at least by my standards as a Medicare card holder...

I usually look forward to your analysis and insight. Kinda disappointed to only get one post from you on the game. Hopefully the team will captivate your interest more in the near future.

I’m feeling completely disinterested in basketball these days. And it has nothing to do with the slow start. I don’t think non-conference games mean much for 1-bid leagues.

I should be more excited about this team than any other since the late 90s. I just honestly don’t care. I don’t know these guys. I haven’t watched them develop for 3 or 4 years. They’re transient pilgrims. I’m not emotionally invested in their success nor connected to their stories.

And next year the roster will be completely different, again…
A lot of truth to this. I am onboard 100% this season because Emoni Bates is a generational type prospect, the likes of which we will probably never see again at Eastern but you are absolutely correct in that roster turnover in college sports is tiresome. Teams seems disjointed and patchwork. Hopefully this year's team comes together and the MAC portion of the season is fun and compelling. I don't even want to think about what next season looks like yet.

I kind of agree with both of you guys on this. But also disagree. Tyson, Geeter, Golson, Billingsley, and Jihad will all be on this team for 2-3 more years without much transfer option. Possibly even Noah as well. Luka and Rice have the option to transfer, but I think they will stay. That is our future team. And will be fun to follow them as they grow/develope. And should be a good team in the end.

I feel like Lovejoy is going to be able to pursue greener pastures at some point. Emoni is a lottery pick after this year.

Ramy, I agree with you on the transfer issues. After the Njie experiment, I would be hesitant to invest in a raw prospect like Randle when Golson, Geeter and Billingsley are not going anywhere.

I so want Bates to be the player we all thought he was going to be. Right now, if I am an NBA GM, he is NOT on my draft board, let alone being a lottery pick. Where does he play? He does not defend well on the perimeter or handle the ball. He has the size to back a smaller guard into the basket but heretofore has shown no skill or desire to do so. He does not have the body to mix it up in the paint. I don't see much NBA value outside of his 3-ball stroke.

He is a VERY young kid that got fast-tracked far beyond his capabilities. He needs a TON of work on his game and his body.

Additionally, please guys can we please stop pointing out that he "leads the team" in a particular statistical category? We are freaking 2-6!

Speaking of Lovejoy, did anyone notice he had 4 fouls in 4 minutes of play. Never seen that before. He’ll learn…

Lovejoy is VERY aggressive on defense, which is an anomaly for our D.

Personally, while I hate football penalties and basketball fouls, I despise teams that play so-called "clean" games more. The only way you don't get a whistle is to never attempt to do anything. Stealing the ball, getting an offensive rebound or blocking a shot always come with the risk of committing a foul. I accept most of those as a cost of doing business if reasonably executed. The silly fouls where you get beat off the dribble and hold or foul beyond the three-point line are another issue and are stupid.

You know what I would like to see? DJ Ballard used to come into games, bang it around inside and get a bunch of fouls while also attracting the same number of fouls from our opponents. I think this team needs to see that kind of aggression.

Don't despise "clean" games. As what often separates a good player from a bad one is a bb IQ. Smart players rarely commit fouls. There's no need to commit fouls on offensive rebounds or going for steals if a player is taught properly.

Really? Really? Michael Jordan, with the "star officiating" environment of the NBA still averaged 3 fouls a game. It is his misfortune that he did have someone to properly teach him the game? C'mon Man. You can analyze box scores, quote analytics or actually watch the game.

When you mention Pranger, you revealed that you had not watched the games. The guy is not ready for D1 basketball, his "steals" against mighty WSU were accidental but the box score did not show that. He was plainly out of his element if you actually saw him perform.

Really?

Last 5 years of Jordan's NBA career, he averaged 2.1 fouls per game of less. So he did learn how to foul less often.

I saw videos of Pranger in HS, and have heard good things about him in EMU practices. He looks like a potential good three-point shooter. Get sense he plays smartly. I'm just glad he didn't foul in the game he played in. But I'll defer to your opinion since you saw him play.

ENU's big problem on defense is limiting opponents three-point shooting and not fouling excessively. EMU just can't rely on opponents missing open three's to win games.

I'm with you there. The root cause of such, however, has been a lack of hustle and energy on defense, in my opinion. As mentioned, I HATE fouling a three-ball shooter and we don't, probably more due to the fact that we don't expend the energy to close out on those shots rather than intelligent play. We also don't commit or draw fouls on opponent screens because we automatically switch on all of them. Not real sure about the effectiveness of that strategy at all, it seems to produce quite a few mismatches.

Although it looks like a lack of player's energy to close-out on a three-point shooter, it's my opinion that such is more related to the defensive scheme employed to deny or stop a three-point shooter.

As playing a zone defense on the perimeter and having the defender close-out on the 3-point shooter is iin my opinion useless because the shooter is still taking an open shot. At the very least, defenses should play man to man against known good three-point shooters, set-up further out, get in the face of the three-point shooter, in order to make him dribble. By setting up further out and in his face with forearm
Up between the shooters eyes, so he'll likely decide not to shoot a three, but rather to pass or dribble instead. Even if he shoots a three-ball off his dribble, stats show he will shoot a lower percentage. Even making him shoot a two-ball jumper is a win. If he goes to the hoop there should be a rim protector waiting for his arrival.

On defense bb coaches think when their team is weak inside defensively that they need perimeter players to help inside. They rarely do and therefore should instead hold their ground on the perimeter to stop passes out to the three-point line, and if the ball is shot, run to the hoop for a defensive rebound, with other players rotating back in transition.

When EMU goes inside, players should kick the ball out to it's three-point shooters who rotate to open areas. EMU rarely does this. It should. As it would result in EMU's good three-point shooters taking and making more three's.

I should add that I hate defenders playing with both hands out l-wide because the key to all shooting (although shooting form is also important) is for the eyes to pick-up the hoop early as the brain is making calculations as to hoops location and distance.

The defender bringing his hand up late allows the shooter to see the hoop and calculate both the intended line of flight and distance. Sad part is few defenders bring their arm up before the shooter brings the ball to shooting pocket. They should. Same on defending shots near the rim.

I'm not saying this to brag. But I tested my theory in a tournament. I allowed team to play with both arms down and out-wide. We lost the game by 15-points. That put my team in losers bracket. We switched to playing with one arm up in shooter's face. We made in to the championship game and beat the same team by 20-points. Opponent coach never realized what went wrong.

Very busy sports day.
