Men's game 8: Lafayette
Coming off a 1-2 showing down in Florida at the Gulf Coast Showcase and then a poor late showing against Temple we have a hopeful get right game at home, but it wont be easy. We have dropped 3 in a row heading into this one

Lafayette enters this game at 1-6 under first year coach Mike Jordan, whom was our leading assistant under Spiker

O'Boyle is their leading scorer at 14 a game, but CJ Fulton is their best player and he does a little bit of everything. He is scoring 10.3 points per game, grabbing 5.4 rebounds a game, dishing out 5.3 assists per game and also grabbing 1.7 steals a game. He is 6'2 185, so a decent-sized guard. We will have to know where he is on the court and put a body on him if we want to have success.

Their record is not good, but their schedule has been better than our own. They have losses to Miami, St Johns, St joes, UMBC, UPenn and Penn State, with their lone win over Central Connecticut.

They lost by 6 to Penn in OT, so if that is any gauge, this could be a really tough game. Also would be a bad look for Spiker to lose to his own previous assistant in his first year.

From Drexel's side, We need to get Amari going and it needs to be deeper in the paint. The elbow is far too far out for Amari to be setting up. Amari should be able to get whatever he wants against teams like this. We also need to get something consistent from our experienced guards. The guys on the podcast said it best, but how long can we keep rolling Okros out there? Oden has shown flashes but we need consistency as well. Both have not been helping us. We can't be playing 4 on 5 or 3 on 5. That is not a recipe for success.

Lafayette- 72
Drexel- 74

This was a nice win tonight. Line was 7.5 for Drexel and Drexel wins by 8. Nothing special....just two mediocre teams battling it out, with the less worse of the two teams winning on their home court like they should.

When Drexel went up by 16 in the 2nd half, and as bad as LC was shooting, I figured Drexel would cruise to a blowout. Then Drexel has a few turnovers, and LC which couldn't buy a 3-point shot starts making a bunch and I looked up and the lead dropped from 16 to 6 rather quickly.

Last night's game had 1,346, which isn't bad for a Wednesday night against Lafayette. Previous years, this game wouldn't have broken a thousand. Student section was packed once again.

And this game was going on at the same time as a Big Five doubleheader down the street featuring 4 Philadelphia schools, and that doubleheader drew an embarrassing 3,246 combined, which comes to 811 fans per school on average. This experiment of bringing back the traditional city series doubleheader at the cathedral of college basketball turned out to be a total failure. I think it's save to say that the Big Five is dead. We basically have 4 mediocre mid major schools, not including Drexel, with very little fan interest these days....while Villanova has put themselves at a whole "nuther" level.

Glad the students are still coming out and we are won. We need to have support everywhere to keep those students interested. Hopefully they are having a good time and want to keep coming back. Wednesday night may not ever be the best drawing day of the week, but you would think close by schools could potentially have more interest than random opponents. Would have thought Lafayette would have had more support at the game. Glad Spiker beat his former assistant.

pat yourself on the back jb for being so right about the big 5 being dead and the palestra needing renovations. congratulations! it's great to celebrate the death of great history and tradition!

i'm raising my kids to appreciate the past, present, and future. you ask how we get to so many things. when you want to share special things with your kids...you make it happen...because there's nothing better than that. my son turned on the lasalle-temple game (which you said wasn't on tv...maybe i was hallucinating?) without needing me to ask him to put it on. something registered with him about going to the palestra...even beyond the ice cream i bought him at halftime...so the mission was accomplished. i'd like to think finding amy mallon and denise dillon in the big 5 hall of fame or looking at the pictures of lebron and kobe had something to do with it.

you might be missing the point...but as long as my kids get it...i've done my job. everyone rips the younger generations for not appreciating the past. it's our job to show it to them and we're doing a terrible job of doing it.

really the only thing i've agreed with you about for the last 24 hours is the mediocre basketball being played in the city. i think this is a majority of the struggles with the big 5 and has very little to do with the palestra's seating...if anything. i can't find anything wrong with the liacouras center (although i would imagine you can) but their attendance on sunday was terrible because the team isn't very good. schools not named villanova look even worse standing next to villanova. hopefully they can rise up to make the matchups interesting again.

hopefully they never play day games for future palestra games. hate to get too much sun your eyes like at coca cola park.

I have no problem with the Liacouras Center. I think it's the best basketball arena in the city by far. The DAC, with the recent renovations, might be second. And you think I'm a complainer? Think about all the people on social media who are afraid to take public transportation into the city because they're going to get shot or raped? I have no problem taking the BSL Temple's arena. And with my complaints about Coca Cola Park...it's a fine ballpark. I just wish they built it with more shaded seats. The IronPigs' great success just makes it more difficult to get those shaded seats. I mean come on, don't you tell your patients not to be out in the sun too much?

And of course you don't have to agree with me. But that's why we're here.

RE: Men's game 8: Lafayette
i went to the state archives in harrisburg today. i'm helping the penn state faculty senate track down the records from the land sales from the morrill act that formed the original endowment of the university back in 1862.

the book was old and gross looking with a cover that was faded and falling apart. nobody has looked at it in years probably. it was written in cursive so it was hard to read since nobody writes that way anymore.

i don't know why they don't just burn it...or at least put a fancy new cover on it. nobody is looking at it so it's a total failure. who really cares or appreciates looking at something from 1862 anyway?
