One name not on the list is Helton at Georgia Southern. Should he win a bowl game (or two) I wouldn’t be surprised to see his career resurrected at a lower P5. A winning pedigree at GSU and past USC tenure might make him attractive to a struggling P5 in the SEC or Big 10.

Nah he's still got a ways to go to fix what people saw as wrong with him. Highly doubtful he goes somewhere after struggling to a 6-6 finish after being 5-3 earlier in the season. If he has an impressive year next year then there's a better chance.

Context is for kings! Cignetti was asked what he’d learned about himself over the past two years of COVID and FBS transition. He basically said nothing, that as a coach’s son, a long time assistant, and head coach at other schools, that he’s pretty much done and seen everything. Then he said he had six years left on his contract and felt like he could coach 10 or 15 more good years. To me, it didn’t sound at all like a coach thinking about leaving. He said he knew exactly what to do when the move to FBS was announced, and he knows exactly what to do next…at JMU.

Not that I believe he would leave for an AAC school, but I believe he was the DC at Tulane before coming to Troy with Neal Brown. They have an opening now that Fritz has been hired by GT. I don't think Sumrall leaves after one season either, but you never know.
Kinda hate that Fritz is heading to GT.

What’s his salary with bonuses?

Presently around $1 mil.

It’s his age that’s the issue tho, and associated personal dynamics that will keep Cignetti at JMU. He’s not leaving for a low P5, and higher P5s are not coming for a 62 year old coach with 1 year of G5 FBS experience. He’ll be 63 after season number 2 in the SBC, so the odds of Cignetti leaving (saying he’s as successful, or even more so in 2023) just keep getting longer. He recently signed a 6 year extension on his contract, and said he thought he might coach another 10-15 years. Time will tell.

Acknowledging “money talks and BS walks” the circumstances still have to be right, and there are many, many other young(er) HC prospects out there waiting for a P5 job to come calling. Cignetti has a sweet situation where he sits, and he’s smart enough to know it.

Cignetti’s comments struck me the same way. It very much came across as to mean he was building something at JMU, and he knew exactly how he wanted to do it.

Of course, nothing in life is certain, right? Except death and taxes. 04-cheers

FWIW Cignetti also said in his post-game press conference that institutional membership in leagues/conferences are fluid, suggesting JMU may find itself impacted by future opportunities.

I don’t see Cignetti’s comments as anything more than recognizing the reality of the present college coaching world, and it wasn’t meant to suggest JMU’s commitment to the SBC will change anytime soon.

If past history is any guide, we know JMU is loyal to a fault to its current league, and all JMU administrations have been very cautious and conservative about making changes. It’s part of JMU’s DNA…as is born out by the fact that in nearly 120 years of existence JMU has been led by only 6 presidents. Yep, six…for better or worse. The good side of that history is that JMU’s administrative stability has = a steady, slow, and strategically deliberative process to its decision making. It’s exactly the kind of situation that matches Cignetti’s own personality and career path.

Go Dukes!

Yeah, his age may be an issue with other programs wanting to take a chance as well if he wants to take on the challenge of taking over another program. I was thinking Lance Liepold as a potential comparison. He's a couple of years younger but initial contract had him making nearly $3 million per year at Kansas with a 6 year deal. Willie Fritz is another comparison if he gets the GT job. Cignetti may not care about the money and be happy to stay at JMU, but I could see with his Alabama experience that a team may be wanting to get him in. Also, if the West Virginia job opens up I wonder if they'd look t him since he's a former player.

I know not all things are about money, but for someone nearing retirement it may be hard to turn down a guaranteed $15-$20 million over the next 5-6 years if the opportunity presents itself.

West Virginia would be the one job that would worry if it opened up.

It is funny to me how fans see coaching as some kind of a loyalty issue. Coaching is a business. A BIG business. No one here would stay at their job out of loyalty if offered 10 times as much at another business with a ton more perks. It’s just silly to think a coach stays put out of love for a school.

If I were a P5 AD, I wouldn't hire Chadwell until he shows me he can win at a high level without Grayson McCall.

I don't see it as a loyalty issue. I know it's a big business, but it won't stop your former coworkers being pissed off at you for leaving with 50% of your employees and some of their accounts.

Believe me, I feel your pain. Monken left us two weeks before signing day with absolutely no notice. Chased the NFL before coming back to Georgia as OC. Don’t know if that is a black mark on him getting a head coaching job now but it is what it is.

I think you’re right about a WVU opening, however, that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon, and by the time that coaching opportunity “might” open Cignetti would be that much older. Would WVU be interested in a 65 year old HC? I seriously doubt it.

USF was a good job, once upon a time. (Tampa, great recruiting location, building a new on-campus stadium, etc.) On PAPER it is probably a better job than Coastal. But only on paper.

The last couple bad hires killed all of their momentum and are a big reason they're staying in the AAC for the time being.

Skip Holtz made the mistake of leaving ECU as we were peaking for USF, and we see how that turned out. Hopefully Chadwell doesn't do the same.

Skip Holtz made the mistake of leaving ECU as we were peaking for USF, and we see how that turned out. Hopefully Chadwell doesn't do the same.

A move like that would tell me that Chadwell knows his success is hitched to McCall and is jumping on a bigger check before it's too late.

We haven't seen much success without McCall yet. Coastal may very well be dodging a bullet if that became true. Would potentially be beneficial to end that era and bring in a new staff.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Sounds like the Freeze to Auburn deal is finally done. Will be interesting to see who they go after next. Knowing Liberty, I would assume it will either be Thanos or Freddy Krueger.
