RE: SBC Officials
There have been two times that I have gotten extremely loud at a game with SBC officials. Both have been at deep officials (Field Judges to be exact). Saturday was the second time.

It wasn't a call that "cost us the game" or "changed the outcome" but just piss poor officiating. Gore scored a TD (he is such a stud). Celebrates with his teammates. Then he proceeds to "bowl" the football, well after his celebration with teammates. FJ standing right there and does nothing. I went ballistic. That is the kind of crap that causes issues later in games and it definitely doesn't fall under celebration with teammates and was a "prolonged" celebration. When the White Hat came to the back of the endzone for the kick off I started in on him about how that wasn't called. He even smiled and made the bowling gesture, knowing exactly what I was talking about.

Now, I am not one to stop players from celebrating but you have to control things like that. The FJ didn't even admonish the players. Hopefully he gets hammered on his evaluation. If not, then the conference needs to put out a list of what is acceptable and what is not and ensure that it is enforced across all crews.

RE: SBC Officials
Something like that does not both me. It bothers me when calls impact the final score. The guy may have got overly excited....sobeit.

This is the first year since we have been in existence that I thought the officiating was really piss poor. Coincidence that it was Sunbelt officials...I don't know.

I can handle calls that are judgement calls. Holding calls...pass interference (usually this is the culprit). The game happens fast and refs have to make split second decisions. We had one clear PI that the ref reached for his flag and then didn't throw, that was infuriating but still a judgement call.

One game, we had the officials constantly call out penalties for the wrong side and then would have to huddle for 5 mins. It wasn't just once or twice or three times...I've never seen officials get the wrong team called so often.

We had a very poorly officiated game vs. Liberty where there QB fumbled on a pass that was a lateral...it was a completely game changing type call. Its like the refs forgot to look to see if the pass was a lateral or not and simply reviewed for a fumble or pass. Then later in the game, they (likely correctly) called a lateral on us. Its like the Ref realized they made a mistake and then made the right call later....hurting us.

The failure to spot balls and then not review the spot were a common theme.

This past Saturday we scored a game tying TD in the last couple minutes or so. The RB picked up the DE and blocked him 1v1 (waist level). After engaging with the DE, the OT hit the defender in the shoulder. It had no impact on the play and was not in any shape or form a dangerous block. They called it a chop block (2nd and 22 instead of game tying TD) even though we not only did not block at the thigh or lower and did not have 2 players engaged with the defender at the same time. To be clear on the rule, it has to be 2 offensive players engaged with one defensive player at the same time while one of the offensive players blocks at the thigh or lower.

Officiating is on the decline everywhere and it's probably not going to get any better. High school officiating crews in Georgia are spread incredibly thin and every crew seems to have a first-timer in it.
In our modern era, people feel very comfortable with confronting officials on and off the field and even doxxing them so that they can't even feel safe at home. They don't get paid enough for that.

The shortage is nationwide. I officiated for 15 years and you put in a lot of hours. Now, you have to deal with parents and coaches wanting to confront officials and you now have too many attacks on officials. It is to the point it isn't worth the effort and I am not sure I would do it if I started in today's environment. When you got coaches with 7-8 year old teams wanting to confront officials as if they are coaching in the Super Bowl, it is time to reevaluate. Not sure what it will take unless you start banning teams for the actions of parents and coaches. Sad really.

RE: SBC Officials
I'll never get mad at a ref for not calling a celebration penalty unless he's already called a softer one on us. Penalizing celebration is stupid.
