We stopped buying Christmas presents something like 10 years ago. Christmas dinner we still do, but that’s it. It’s nothing but commercialized BS anymore.

And it has been for a long time. Seriously, they used to at least wait until Thanksgiving was over before breaking out the xmas crap. Now they start in on it right after Halloween.

As a divorced father back in the day I went nuts spending on my two kids. They had to have to have all the latest and greatest gadgets - or at least I thought they did. I put a stop to it all when they got jobs and had their own kids. Surprisingly neither of them turned out spoiled rotten.

I will occasionally get them something I think they need, like I thought last year that my son needed a .300 blackout with a 10 inch barrel, so I built him one. I got my daughter a gift card of equal value just because she's a girl and I know nothing about them. 03-drunk

Today will be the big day and reveal the Christmas gorging... Or at least that is what the retailers will/are saying.

As previously noted, Amazon is already laying off 1,000's going into the season so it sounds like today's numbers will be falling flat as well.

SAVE YOUR MONEY - it will be a virtual giveaway by February when all these retailers need to purge all the excess inventory.

I saw a great BEE headline the other day:

Retailers offering HUGE Black Friday bargains as they sell items for prices right before Biden took office.

Black Friday

Jeepers man, now you tell me. I got you one of those Pink Hats that are the rage now. They said Wokesters aren't buying them because their parents stopped their allowances because they're having a hard time buying groceries. They said that potato chips are getting stale in the aisles because no one is buying them. Pretty soon we're gonna see a lot of fat ex-aunt tifas losing weight and perhaps if they're lucky can finally get a boyfriend.

No worries, maybe I can still find the receipt.

Nope. If internet sales were booming Amazon would not be laying off workers. This is not surprising nor should this even be news. The consumer is tapped out. The last line of defense was credit cards and those balances have now risen to record highs---and the rates have risen--meaning the monthly credit card payments have increased higher than expected. The consumer is now running out of sources of disposable funds to tap (I suspect we are about to see home refi applications start rising despite interest rates not being very advantageous). Keep in mind---over 60% of people reported that they are now living paycheck to paycheck. Cant cut fuel purchases---you need gas to get to work. Cant cut food. Still gunna heat the house this winter. Cant cut the credit card payments and cant get the limit raised. Cant cut any of those essential bills---but you can spend less for Christmas this year---and thats whats going to happen.

I'm not so sure. I saw this AM where Cyber Monday did set a new record...something like 11 Billion in sales. Could be a ton on credit however. Also a good bit of this get returned..so the figure is preliminary.
I thought the Amazon cuts had a lot to do with them having to beef up during Covid and now not needing that extra staff now. Anyway...for sure the brick and mortar stores are hurting. I talked to a manager at WM on last Saturday and she said Black Friday was down about 1/3 from previous years. Something is going on.

I will say this...

I did a walmart order the other day.... about a dozen people were waiting to be served at the pick up door. While I waited, I realized i needed one more thing... so since I was there, I ran in... as much as I hate to go in to Walmart.

It was a ghost town inside. Seriously... no waiting for check-out at all.

Where the hell do you guys live? I went to several retailers on Friday around noon and the stores were busy. Not wrapped around the building busy, but annoying to walk around so many people busy.

Amazon isn’t just retail. It’s cloud computing, retail, digital content, device, voice recognition, home security, and a grocer. A lot of the Amazon layoffs are coming from Device/Alexa and back end corporate redundancies. Amazon is making the shift from growth mode to maturity and tightening the belt is expected there. Retail conditions are a small factor in amazons layoffs.

Black Friday has been waning as the indicator of holiday retail spending and the pandemic may have just put the nail in the coffin and shifted peoples habits.

The manager I spoke to a WM said the the 5am lines were way down from the last few years. No rush to the doors as has happened before. Business was busy all day but not "doorbusting" like in the past. That could explain your experience.

Lots of stores had already started the deals before Black Friday due to inventory issues. My guess is that helped play a role in decreased activity on actual Black Friday.

It was up 2.2 percent year over year. Given that we have an inflation rate of 8% (or higher)—-that means we have a real world inflation adjusted DECLINE in sales of around 6% (despite the more aggressive discounting).
