Bow Tie-In Question
In CUSA, all the bowl payouts were pooled and handed out to all members with the bowl teams receiving a slightly higher disbursement. Each bowl eligible team could keep the first $100K in ticket sales and anything over that went into the pool. “Reasonable” travel costs were covered by the conference.

The conference and ESPN decided the bowl selections based mostly on geography and match-up. The conference champ didn’t automatically go to X bowl every year. For example, in 2014, no. 23 Marshall as the CUSA Champ was pitted against 11-2 MAC Champ Northern Illinois in the Boca Raton Bowl. The runner-up, La Tech, got Illinois in the armed Forces Bowl. Ask any Herd fan and they would have much rather had the P5 match up even though the Illini were only a 6 or 7 win team.

Is the selection and bowl process similar in the SBC or completely different?

I think at the time we had a choice between NIU and Illinois and Doc chose NIU hoping it would boost our top 25 ranking since NIU was a stronger opponent. We dropped out of the top 25 on week 12 and crept back in to end the season ranked 23rd in the final AP poll after demoralizing NIU 52-23.

RE: Bow Tie-In Question
Bow ties should never be in question when attending black-tie events.

The hypocrisy of G5 fans when it comes to bowl opponents kills me. From August through November we argue that our best teams are just as good as theirs and it's all a bunch of baseless media hype. Then when bowl bids come out, it's "Why the f*** are we stuck playing this sorry 10-win MWC/MAC team instead of that .500 P5 team?"
