I’m going to work on that today just for funsies. You all know I love depth charts.

Love it, thanks Bovine.

Next year should be a breakthrough year.

-I had no idea Sparacio wasn't graduating. That is ENORMOUS. He is so much better than anyone else playing LB.
-If Jose comes back, then wow. If he can go pro, then he should but man would he help us.
-Lassiter and Knue coming back help a ton.
-Evans and Jackson are a great duo
-Howie, Dmitri, Doolie, Johnson is a great core
-Cline at LB is a stud
-Getting Merrit and Haney back will shore up our Dline
-I've been huge on Swindle, Peyton and Carter Evans and think next year they make noise
-Gomez and Tomascek coming back shore up Specials
-Secondary is littered with guys with experience

The only question mark is at QB. I like Austin Smith and hope he is the guy but knowing CC he will bring in a transfer.

BOTTOM LINE....this is a SUPER loaded group. The most talent we have seen.

Must've been a oversight because Bates is now listed on the senior day list

Question about the seniors/non seniors
Hopefully Lefty Gomez doesn't decide to go P5. The kid is legit so I wouldn't be surprised.

100% agree! Creighton put him on scholarship far earlier than Ryland but that is akin to extending a MAC coaching contract, a "small beer" effort to keep someone around.

If Sparacio is coming back, we need to pop the champaign corks. He is the first, second and third best tackler we have on the team, nobody else comes close. Ball carriers end up on their back when he hits them.

The depth chart today is very revealing. We have a prior two-year starter at linebacker now listed as third string on the depth chart. That kind of says it all. Scheme, formation, etc... really are insignificant if you don't have the horses and we have not at linebacker in recent years.

Seems better than what I had thought.

Jose accepted a bid to the East-West Shrine Bowl. Assume that means he is history at EMU.

The big thing is the transfer portal next month. Any talk before then is perhaps premature as the late Donald Rumsfeld said, "We don't know what we don't know."

I believe the first transfer window is right after the 4 teams are selected for the CFP and is open for 45 days.

I assume that facilitates mid-year transfers. Why do spring ball as a school you're leaving???

"The board adopted the following notification-of-transfer windows:

Fall sports: a 45-day window beginning the day after championships selections are made in their sport, or May 1-15.
Reasonable accommodations will be made for participants in the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision championship games.
Winter sports: a 60-day window beginning the day after championships selections are made in the sport."

RE: Question about the seniors/non seniors
BTW, this is interesting. The way I read it:

"Johnny transfers from State U. to directional U. for his final two seasons of eligibility." As I read this the NEW school "directional U", here is required to give him financial scholarship for his last two years OR until he gets his bachelor's degree.

"NCAA rules now will require any school that considers athletics when awarding scholarships to transfer student-athletes to provide that scholarship for the rest of a student's five-year eligibility or until they complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree, unless the student transfers again or engages in professional athletics opportunities."

Hey guys, giving my best shot on next year’s depth chart. Please let me know what you think, or if you see any omissions or errors. Obviously a lot will change between now and next fall, but I thought this would be fun to look at.

Offense
QB - Austin Smith, Cam’ron McCoy, Brooks Blount
I’m sure we’ll add a transfer here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Blount passes McCoy once he knows the offense.

RB - Samson Evans, Jay Jackson, Darius Boone Jr., Bryson Moss, Elijah Jackson-Anderson
Lots of depth here, but we will probably see one or two of these guys leave. I love Moss’ game. Would like to see him play more. Jackson is a guy I could see moving to the slot.

WR - Tanner Knue, Isaac Smith
WR - Darrius Lassiter, JB Mitchell III
WR - Kaiden Keefe, Chris Gundy, Jay Jackson?
Lots of questions here with so much talent graduating. Many additions to come. But with Knue and Lassiter coming back, that’s a good start.

TE - Jere Getzinger, Andreas Paaske, Aaron Jackson, Max Reese
We will miss Oakes, but there’s a lot of potential here. I’m not sure if Jackson’s coming back — selfishly I hope so.

LT - Marcellus Johnson, Jez Janvier
LG - Alex Howie, Jimi McAdams IV
C - Dimitri Douglas, Broderick Roman
RG - Mickey Rewolinski, Carson Lee
RT - Brian Dooley, Zack Conti
I’ve seen people say that they are concerned about this group. However, we’re returning 3 starters, and the two “new” starters have extensive experience themselves. I’m excited about this group if we can improve the depth at a few spots.

Defense
DE - Joseph Zelinsky, Carter Evans, Maliek Bogard
NT - Alex Merritt, Melvin Swindle II
NT - Peyton Price, Dexter Manior, Tim Grant-Randle
DE - Mike Haney, Mikah Coleman, Jaden Gaines
Big loss with Ramirez, but enough depth and experience to be a strength. We’ll also get new JUCO talent here that could contribute right away.

LB - Joe Sparacio, Luke Cameron
LB - Chase Kline, Steven Scheidt, Justin Jefferson
I didn’t know that Sparacio was able to come back, but several of you have said as much. If so, this could be one of the best units in the MAC.

CB - Kempton Shine, Keylen Gunney
CB - Mark Lee Jr., Josh Scott
SS - TJ Peavy, Robert Daniel Jr.
FS - Cam Smith, David Carter Jr.
Rover - Quentavius Scandrett, Kendric Nowling
We’ve got pretty heavy losses here - Hernandez, Benson, Vaden, and Bogan. The corners still look very good, IMO. Peavy and Scandrett are solid safeties. I think FS is the team weakness as of now. Can someone talk me off the ledge?

K - Jesus Gomez
P - Mitch Tomasek
Elite specialists - please don’t leave!

Overall there’s a lot to like here. Some questions I have: How will Austin Smith develop as a passer? Will he be able to consistently and correctly get through two progressions? If so, he’ll be dangerous. If not, he’ll be a part-time guy. Also, how will our receiver depth grow? Knue and Lassiter are great core pieces, but we will need more. As I mentioned, I have worries about FS.

Awesome news is that this depth chart doesn’t even include any newcomers, and is still very good!

What do you all think?

Unless McCoy is deemed ready to go, by all means we need a transfer QB. Too many MAC QBs have gone down this season, you certainly need two.

I remember bitching about how much Roback avoided getting hit in his senior year UNTIL I saw Steibling play when Brogan got his leg broken in that last game.

We have been fortunate since, Wiegers-Glass, Hutch-Bryant and this season Powell-Smith. We have needed them all.

What do you all think?

That seems about right to me. I would throw in a few thoughts:

-I would also look out for Jackson-Anderson at the RB spot. He's a true freshman who was a big recruit and has played a bit already this year. I thought he was really good at Grand Blanc.

-I agree Knue and Lassiter are a great starting place at WR, but then what? I have to say that is one spot in the Creighton era I'm not worried about because it always seems like there is a "who the hell is that guy?" that turns out to be Arthur Jackson, Matt Sexton, Beydoun, Drummond, Knue, etc.

-Max Reese at TE could make an impact, I know the coaches seemed high on him and he was a big recruit. Sounds like he's more of a receiving threat at TE.

-Jaden Gaines, Carter, Evans, and Maliek Bogard were all highly regarded D-ends. We need one of them to take a big step in year 2-3 for all of them. (I know Messiah Blair is coming in as our highest rated recruit ever, but I'm not expecting anything from a true freshman).

I think the weakness of this team could be at QB. We need improved, more consistent play from that position. Whether that comes from Smith improving or bring in a transfer we shall see.

'bovine, I do have a question about your concern at FS. You definitely seem to have a better grasp of the Xs and Os than I do, what are your thoughts on Cam Smith? Just from my untrained eye, it seems like he's made a few plays lately. I know he's young, do you see potential with him in that role?

Blair's MLK team will play for state championship after beating Mason yesterday.

Hey guy, giving my best shot on next year’s depth chart.

RB - Samson Evans, Jay Jackson, Darius Boone Jr., Bryson Moss
Lots of depth here, but we will probably see one or two of these guys leave. I love Moss’ game. Would like to see him play more. Jackson is a guy I could see moving to the slot.

WR - Tanner Knue, Isaac Smith
WR - Darrius Lassiter, JB Mitchell III
WR - Kaiden Keefe, Chris Gundy, Jay Jackson?
Lots of questions here with so much talent graduating. Many additions to come. But with Knue and Lassiter coming back, that’s a good start.

TE - Jere Getzinger, Andreas Paaske, Aaron Jackson
We will miss Oakes, but there’s a lot of potential here. I’m not sure if Jackson’s coming back — selfishly I hope so.

LT - Marcellus Johnson, Jez Janvier
LG - Alex Howie, Jimi McAdams IV
C - Dimitri Douglas, Broderick Roman
RG - Mickey Rewolinski, Carson Lee
RT - Brian Dooley, Zack Conti
I’ve seen people say that they are concerned about this group. However, we’re returning 3 starters, and the two “new” starters have extensive experience themselves. I’m excited about this group if we can improve the depth at a few spots.

Defense
DE - Joseph Zelinsky, Carter Evans
NT - Alex Merritt, Melvin Swindle II
NT - Peyton Price, Dexter Manior, Tim Grant-Randle
DE - Mike Haney, Mikah Coleman

FS - David Carter Jr., Cameron Smith

Yeah, very excited to watch them play next weekend! They are playing Muskegon, it should be a great game. It's 7:30 Saturday night on Bally Sports Detroit for anyone interested.

Thanks Sellers! Good call on Jackson-Anderson, Reese, Gaines, and Bogard — those are talented guys, and I added them to my chart.

-I don’t want to be negative, but I really think we are going to lose a RB or two. There’s just too much talent. Boone Jr. and/or Moss seem like obvious transfer candidates. I believe in the end Jackson-Anderson will see significant carries.
-Totally agree with you on the WRs; this staff should be given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to finding WR talent. One or two players will emerge from out of nowhere, and will supplement Knue and Lassiter.
-Good point on Cam Smith. He’s been playing more and more as the season has gone along, and appears to be developing. He’s got potential; athletic, with a good recruiting profile (3 stars from the major services). I guess I’m unsure about him due to lack of experience. He hasn’t played enough to get a grade from Pro Football Focus, so I’m not sure how he’s looking in coverage. Frankly I need to rewatch some of our most recent games and pay more attention to what he’s doing. I absolutely think he can be a good one.

I'm not worried about FS. David Carter Jr has some talent.

Pretty good take on the O-Line. A few points I'd like to throw out here. Center might be more open than one might anticipate. Carson Lee was brought in primarily for his experience there, so he may end up in the two-deeps there. Dimitri may also end up somewhere other than Center depending on how things go through the Spring. And I've mentioned before that Daniel Warnsman is a solid candidate for two-deeps. He could take the #2 at RG if you shift Lee to #2 at C. Not sure if that would cut Roman or someone else off the list. Bottom line...Winter workouts and Spring ball will play a large role in how the O-Line will fill out for 2023.

Good info, Syd — thank you! I didn’t know that Lee was so flexible. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out in the Spring. The OL and the WR positions might be the most fun to watch unfold.
