Happy we were not put in the bottom conference, SBC.

Bait taken.

2 points:

Learn the definition of bottom. The SBC is no where near the bottom in basketball whereas CUSA is the bottom ranked FBS football conference.

Second, we are less than 10% thru the 22-23 basketball season. Therefor Sagarin isn’t worth looking at yet. At least according to Jeff Sagarin it’s not.

The only thing your link tells me is that the 2 best schools in the Belt are under the two best schools in CUSA. For the Access Bowl that's all that matters.

Hmm, you may want to check last year's conference rankings again. That specific statement is not supported 04-cheers

If playing mid-week (like the nfl does/did) then why is it so bad? I'd love to see cusa games when there's no football at all and all eyes are focused on one solitary college football game. I'm all for it even if the fans in the stands aren't there, (as if it made a difference, most of the time these schools, mine included average about 10k) at least they'll be getting attention and will be the prima donnas on tv rather than an afterthought on a Saturday.

I have to agree about Jax State being in the 1 spot. We *DO* have naysayers, though, with that crowd split evenly between "wHy ArE wE tRyInG tO bE bAma?", "FBS is too expensive!", and, yes, "Why didn't we go to the Sun Belt?"

The first group are idiots. Ignore them.

The second group have their hearts in the right place, generally, but don't understand how expensive FCS football is. If you're good enough to make the playoffs, it winds up costing you even more money. The FCS Championship Game, especially, is a money pit.

Yes, FBS is more expensive. But even at the G5 level, the increased revenues and exposure more than make up for the added cost. I don't have time to break down the financials for every disgruntled Gamecock fan, but at least I understand why they're unhappy.

Finally, the third group. Their preference for the Sun Belt has nothing to do with any perceived advantage in strength or prestige. Instead, it's squarely rooted in one thing: familiarity with the teams. Most older JSU fans still consider troy state our #1 rival. Fans from the Mobile area would've liked to have seen us playing USA in conference. Fans from Georgia would've liked to have seen us playing Ga State and Ga Southern every season.

Everyone else is pretty much on the same page. CUSA may not be perfectly perfect in every way, but it's WAY better than being mired in the uncertainty and growing costs of FCS.

The fact that it gives us the option to (eventually) schedule home-and-homes with teams like UAB, troy state, USA, Ga Southern, Ga State, etc., is just a nice bonus.

Also... FCS teams won't be included in NCAA23. 02-13-banana

I think the "Happiest with Conference USA" rankings should have only included nine schools. FIU should have been disqualified from consideration for not meeting the minimum of 50 fans!

I see the disadvantages for a school like Western playing Oct games on week nights vs Nov. Nov attendance is going to drop almost every year because of the weather. So I get that and Oct is usually fairly good attendance.

But in Oct fans and I'm not just talking home team but fans in general are a lot more interested in college football than they are in Nov. By the time Nov gets here there is more teams than not out of conference races. Hell a lot are out of the running for bowl games....

Oct football games just mean more for more fans. With that you should get higher ratings. I haven't studied the numbers for MAC or SBC in Oct vs Nov games. But I will be surprised if Oct ratings are not higher.

The attendance you are losing from out of town fans will be made up by students because most have nothing to do or planed on a Tuesday or Wednesday night at 6pm. But they do like it when they have a chance to get their face on TV. So more students will show up.

There are so gives and some takeaways but if the conference delivers the next deal will be better

Southland better than both. What’d you say, ‘inutech’? I think SHSU and LaTech would make a great 9 and 10 for the SLC.

Things are bad, but not that bad.

Between us we already have like 14 SL football trophies.

I was one of WKU fans that wanted to be in the MAC, however now I'm in the wait and see mode for a couple years with the new CUSA. The new CUSA does excite me in bball, however that excitement will be severely dampened IF the MWC eventually takes UTEP and/or NMSU (or Liberty going to the AAC as another example). IF that happens, I may jump on MAC bandwagon again, but hopefully it doesn't come to that until at least AFTER we collect exit fees.

For Tech, I'm OK. Hate seeing newer schools advance before us, but that is market, fan apathy, and timing. I do love being with WKU because of a huge basketball history with us, Sam Houston because of Southland ties, and NMSU for the WAC days. Interested for JSU and KSU because they are near me. Liberty with the "bank", probably bolts first.

Tech just has seemed to be walking in mud since the WAC days. I loved CUSA when we were CUSA 3.0, but I have to admit, there were stronger rivalries when we were the outlier in the WAC before it went to hell by the MWC poaching.

Murfreesboro is ranked the #1 most-growing city in the nation (for cities with a population of 100,000 or greater). If you cannot raise money here, you're not even trying.

It is quite baffling, but there are rumors that say that Prez Seven-Wood likes it that way (i.e. he keeps his job if he does what UT-Knoxville wants him to do). I've also heard that ut-k wants us to move down to FCS.

7-Wood McPhee has been here over 20 years and just signed an extension to December 2026. Our enrollment has been steadily decreasing for years. Who in the hell keeps him in power ?

That said........we cannot blame the "arnge" for all of our misgivings, although they do make it difficult.

Attendance decreases have been a topic for MT fans but it’s mostly uninformed. Our numbers have gone down a bit but that’s simply because we’ve been much more selective in admissions lately. I think that is the right move and has shown in our academics increasing in prestige.

OK, it's not as bad as the MAC. But both are far worse than CUSA, MWC, and AAC.

I agree that the Sam Houston fan base is very split on the FBS move. It’s going to take an effort to win them over and that’s seeing success plus facility enhancements.

The program fans have said they don’t want to be a Texas State which has failed miserably on field during their run in FBS
Wait TexasTerror how do you feel about Texas State and their move into “FBS Football”?? I don’t think you’ve ever made your opinion on them known!

Cannot be any WKU fans happy with the present if they are truely honest with themsleves. OUr attendence was better in Sun Belt and now only going to get worse adding schools no one has heard of. WKU has done their part to prop up CUSA and it has not happened despite our overall success on the fields and courts where it matters. MAC, Sun Belt or ASUN Or BUST! It is okay to want to move to the MAC. But for the life of me, I don’t understand it. Can you explain why you want the MAC?

I am an avid college football fan, and I am a Kentuckian. I see nothing of interest in the MAC. It’s a northern cold weather conference. It just reminds me of rust, snow, and overcast skies. There is no excitment in playing any of those teams.

What do you see in the MAC that I don’t?

Some people have a complex of being left.

A lot of Western fans that I talk to in person or even on message/facebook/twitter boards that panicked when all the moving started have soften on CUSA and see the MAC for what it is......retirement home that once you get there dying is the only way out.

This is the same person who bitched and complained about the SBC when Western was in it. I'm sure he would have done the same if he was old enough when Western played in OVC. He will do the same if Western joined the MAC, for his next 40 years...

But that's what fans do we all find something to complain about and sometimes it defies logic

I deal in facts man, dont pretend like I cannot see what you are saying. MAC or BUST! My in laws live in Buffalo and I live in Lexington, the MAC is a better overall fit than a 100 schools in Texas being added. I am not the only one who feels this way, most of the WKU alums I know living in Lexington feel the same. Not everyone has YG viewpoint.

As a WKU alum and former season ticket holder, I have zero excitement level to be in MAC. WKU has much more in common with southern schools and I despise cold weather. There is no more hype to play Eastern Michigan than there is to play Sam Houston. I don’t get the disdain for Texas schools either, they are a football state and that only can help recruiting. Decent basketball schools, good baseball and competitive football in a southern environment gets my vote. Judy needs to go, she is terrible at PR and conference needs new guidance. Average fans out in the state don’t have any knowledge regardless which conference we are in, just have a good out of conference schedule.
