MyBB Game Week: @Oakland
Bradley game is over, hopefully forgotten and now to a rivalry game, Oakland.

Now thinking Bradley was a 'trap' game between UofM and Oakland. A bus ride to Peoria???

Like Peoria is l400 miles (depending on route). I realize all expressway but still has to be taxing.

I drove from D.C. to Ypsilanti (attended the UB game incognito) and had to split the drive (500 miles) up into 2 segments.

Des Moines to Ypsi is 567.6 miles. It is a straight shot but not fun. To your point, not ideal but a good team doesn't lose by 28 points to another mid major because of a long bus ride. I can see maybe 10 or 12 but 28 points means you got your ass handed to you.

They spent a few days reading the press clippings. it happens - hopefully not very often.

I agree that this was probably the larger reason for the performance. Hangovers after emotional games (win or lose) can take a toll, but championship teams find a way to overcome and be ready no matter what. Have to be better, no excuses for being slaughtered like we did. Sure the bus ride would have been long, but I assume they got there the night before as football always does and could get a good nights rest. They would have had 2 full days between the UM game and traveling.

See me comments under the Bradley game about being 'tired.' I used the example of race horse or marathon runners who get 'cooked' and die like dogs. Been there. Done it. Done it ONCE, and only once. I learned!!

One of the problems for performance athletes is to be 'fresh.'

One does not know when someone will feel the effects of travel, loss of sleep, etc. etc. Usually it is 2 nights later, not the night before. E.g., if I had a bad night's sleep Monday I'll fell it more tonight. The 2nd night after is the worst.

That is a brilliant summation/conclusion, Splaining! I was kind of expecting this loss, but not to this extent. You are dealing with temperament of very young people. They will learn and grow, and hopefully this will not happen again (or often as you say).

My biggest concern is what does this do to the momentum of the excitement/intrigue surrounding this team- as BobW is suggesting. We have Emoni for one year and may have already squandered making the most of it. That is disappointing, but it is what it is. This will be a good team and year in the end. And the Bradley game will hopefully be nothing more than a blip in the end. But they will need to correct this immediately and starts with Oakland… Go EMU!!

RE: Game Week: @Oakland
I'm withholding doom and gloom comments until the end of December.

The boys have a chance to get right against Oakland. It should be a fun atmosphere in their dinky gym. I went the last time we played there and JTIV had one of the best poster dunks I've ever seen. Of course, we lost that game by 4 or 5 if my memory serves me right. It was still a good crowd even though I'm pretty sure the students were on Christmas break.

Wish the game was in the evening as my kids start basketball this week and play at 2. BUT I'll cross my fingers that Oakland has a good broadcast.

It seems my non conference running the table isn't going to age well. My hope is this team is ready to go and hitting on all cylinders for conference play

Exactly right.
If we still look like this when we travel to Akron in January, THEN my concern will rise.

RE: Game Week: @Oakland
I never like to critique players- they (usually) represent my alma mater very well and are playing to the best of their ability. That is all that matters to me. But…

After three games, Tyson Acuff is 1/14 (7%) on three point attempts. I hope he finds his shot soon. If not, I think he needs to stop shooting them. And that is unfortunate because this team needs outside shooting other than from Noah and Emoni, and I don’t see anyone else capable of providing that threat consistently.

Lovejoy has only attempted one, I suspect he is not confident in this aspect of his game. Geeter and Jalin seem willing and able- but it has not been in a huge numbers as of yet. I don’t want to see Golson be that guy because he is such an effective scorer in the mid range and inside- and I still cringe from his three point shooting from last year. I believe Jihad can make that shot and glad he got some minutes yesterday, but seems like the coaches are trying to get him to play inside (at least yesterday).

Would like to see the the forwards other than Golson spend more time on the perimeter and attempt the 3. If successful, this would really open things up for Noah, Emoni, and even Golson to maneuver within the arc. Plus, Noah and Emoni are both surprisingly affective rebounders.

Good post.

Acuff has a few problems he needs to work out. One is not deciding to shoot the ball without accessing the situation, Second, his missed shots are going short, long, left and right. That tells me there's something fundamentally wrong with his shooting form. I would have to take a closer look to pin-point what it is. Thirdly, Emoni and Acuff many times committed turnovers passing the ball into the post. They need to recognize when that called play is not there.

2 teams I follow....EMU football and Oakland basketball.

You will likely catch Oakland without their starting point guard. Oakland runs almost everything through them

That isn't surprising to me both of those teams are very talented and have good depth.

I forgot about that. That is actually a fascinatingly unique taste in athletics!

RE: Game Week: @Oakland
After we barely lost to UofM, I wrote that UofM at best is an NCAA bubble team and not top 25. UofM got blitzed by ASU as we got blitzed by Bradley. We are not as bad of a team that we displayed against Bradley. After the UofM game some of you were anointing us as MAC champs lol. I said it was a must win if we were going to be MAC champions because you have to win on the road. There’s no way this team will win the conference because we’re not a good defensive team. I do believe we can be a 4-5 best team in the conference. I watched Oakland play Toledo in person. Oakland fans didn’t support their team. I would gues about 2000 -2500 fans in the seats but don’t know what they reported. Oakland is very similar to us with no dominant low post games. Oakland came out flat against Toledo and couldn’t hit their shots. However that’s because Toledo is a top 25-35 team and loaded with talent. More about Toledo later.

EMU will have to play with great energy and intensity on defense or Oakland will win this game. Let’s see if a little more rest has them inspired to guard Oaklands shooters.

Based on our Jekyll and Hyde play so far, we’re not a good team yet. Good teams play consistently well. Let’s see where we’re at after 10 games.

Our strength will be outside shooting which means we will live or die by the trey. 4 / 16 isn't going to hack it (Bradley game).

If Tyson has made one or two treys the UofM game could have gone our way.

I totally disagree. If you have a first round draft pick in your lineup, a very rare commodity in the MAC, as well as another nationally recognized high profile star, you sure as hell better be competing for a title. This is the MAC not the ACC. Nothing has changed in my mind. Bradley is the #1 ranked mid-major. They played great, Eastern played like crap, hence the result.
