Monday Night Musings
An all time classic basketball game at LCA on Friday Night. The eagles wanted it bad as evident by their aggressive defense and rebounding but came up short. Can we keep the good playing rolling into Peoria Illinois? Vegas does not think so as we are a 9 point underdog. But as a famous rocker once said never play cards with a guy whose first name is a city.
Basketball season comes down to one city. Cleveland I think the MAC is still a one bid league so the NCAA dreams come down to three games in CLEVELAND in MARCH.
Footballs Bowl prospects come down to a different city. Kent Ohio, a win and the fans and Athletic department budget might be happy with the quick lane trip down 94 to Ford Field to maybe play the MSU Spartans. If the quick lane bowl fords can't get the Spartans they may opt to punt this years match up in order to get a closer look a Tagavolia and the TERPS, in which case I think the Eagles are spending the holidays in Boise.
Finally, I wonder how much longer Tom Allen has at Indiana and think that would be a great promotion for Coach Creighton one day.

Solid analysis. NIL appears to have produced a small change, while the portal has been seismic.

NIL has cemented the Power conference advantage and I thought the portal would as well and I was clearly wrong. It has re-arranged the recruiting strategies of coaches as I don't know why a MAC coach would ever offer a scholarship to a HS kid. If the kid proves to be great, he is a risk to enter the portal so why not snag Acuff, Farrakhan, Geeter and Billingsley off the portal instead?

I do think the low-star HS recruit will not attract the attention he once did, and many will have to settle for D2 and D3 offers instead. I lament that but then again, I see what happened with Colin Golson. He is a MAC player that would have been stuck at Sienna Hts.

I will give it to Dan, the portal has indeed worked out and created opportunities for more young men. I also kind of wonder how Murph and Keno would have fared in today's environment. Both were horrible at player development but were reasonably adept at procuring talented JUCO guys available to play immediately. Today they would be able to not only hit the JUCOs but P5 rosters as well.

Sienna Hts? Sienna is a D1 program. That's where Golson transferred from.

Jerry was confused. Siena Heights and THE Siena, a D-I school in N.Y.

Think we need to think more clearer on D-I transfers and effect on high school players.

If 1,500 seniors leave D-I ball each year they must be replaced by 1,500 other players. The only two real 'inputs' to D-I ball are h.s. players (including prep schools, etc.) and JUCO (plus some foreign).

JUCO transferring seems way down.

So it seems that the primary input is still h.s. talent as a transfer player is one who was formerly (usually) was a h.s. recruit.

What we are seeing is some schools are taking the cream of the crop from h.s. and sometimes they transfer (e.g., Emoni). Other players achieve higher than expected and may transfer up. In both cases, they were still h.s. recruits but have gone through transfer.

The last two years many MAC teams have gone the true freshmen route it appears and then fill in from there.

TV pays the bills for football programs, selling hot dogs doesn't. MACtion is here to stay. Some years you get your rival in good weather sometimes you get a snow storm, thunderstorm, down pour, wind tunnel.

You just dropped me a dime, a big assist...

The Bills game has been moved to Ford Field. I think Buffalo is getting 3 or 4 feet of snow this weekend, but...

OMG. Should that game be at Ford Field, too???

The article is not about getting rid of MACtion. It is about how MACtion needs to allow rivalry games to enjoyed by the people in the rivalry. This is a reasonable request.

It is a reasonable request. However, it COULD give recruiting and competitive advantage to teams that have rivals which we do not. Everyone knows what they signed up with when they sign the dotted line with Mickey Mouse.

Masttq, as usual, makes a great point! From purely a CFP standpoint, the Michigan vs Ohio rivalry game could be played in October and the loser of the game might make it into the CFP as a result. That said, who would want to see U-M vs OSU or the Iron Bowl in October? Rivalry games are crucial to the sport, thus they contribute heavily to the college football value package that ESPN is willing to pay for and Toledo vs BGSU needs to be accommodated, in my opinion.

The Maction contract is signed, and Urban Meyer said that when he coached Utah, he wanted all the mid-week games he could get due to TV recruiting exposure.

Here is what I know:

Last season we had all of four watchable home games thanks to Mactiion.

The weather for the MACTION games is horrible, I have never stayed until the end.

Also, I am wondering how TV viewers perceive those empty stands of MAC games.

UM reported 110K for the Illinois game even though there had to be at least 10K seats open in the student section.

I hear you Nickle. I actually think the Bills-Browns game relocated to Detroit had better actual attendance than the Lions-Giants game outside did.
