LIBERTY vs. VA. TECH
Va. Tech @ Liberty

Not really sure what to make of this game. Even with our loss to UConn, I’d expect us to be favored to win. This is a historically bad Va. Tech team, but it still is the Hokies. I would like to thinknour loss to UConn will be motivational and get our fellas refocused. Neither of our final games are gimmes. NMSU is playing better too.

31 Va. Tech
38 Liberty

Attendance: 17,159

Unfortunately, the most anticipated home game in LU history has little sizzle with VT spiraling downward. In a strange way, LU should be more focused after losing to UConn. If they had won and been 9-1, false confidence could have crept into and LU may have laid an egg at home against VT as it did at UConn. With the UConn loss, I expect LU to be much, more focused. A 9-2 LU team with only NMSU remaining could realistically be 10-2. At 10-2, that is an attractive record for a higher level bowl than the entry level bowls LU has won the past 3 years.

RE: LIBERTY vs. VA. TECH
I've felt a jinx on this game all season, ever since VT lost to ODU and looked horrible doing it. But my goodness have they put up some bad stats. My superstitious side says they have to win one eventually, they still have P5 players, so we lose because we are not supposed to.

But with Shedro back, that should give us two viable RBs with T.J. Green. It didn't seem like going to Caper was working and Green got tired by the 4th, after three strong quarters at UCONN. Starting LB Mike Smith was game time decision at Uconn, and didn't play, but hopefully he's ready to go this week. Really curious how much him being down cost us on some of those early runs we were giving up.

I do think being at home and coming off a bitter loss will help refocus, like you all said.

This game is all about mindset.

If the guys come in focused on beating a team that overlooked nearly all of them as recruits, this will be a beatdown like BYU.

If they come in expecting to win, this will either be an ugly win like Akron or an ugly loss like UConn.

These guys have the potential to be special, but they have to focus like every game is a chance to prove themselves, not an inconvenience to get through.

On the flipside, the crowds have been really good all season, and it jacks the team up to have full stands. Will Thanksgiving break and cold weather mess with the players morale? There will be a smaller student section and the cold may drive the baptist side away.

I don’t know what it is, but Flames haven’t played the same since the Arkansas win. Not the same defense and the offense is flat.

I think the best bowl we can expect now is one out of the country, one at a soccer stadium in Florida or one at the beach on an ugly teal field. Had a chance to be a special year and we laid an egg the last two weeks. The way this team has under performed the last two weeks, I see them struggling to get a win against NMSU.

It’s like we peaked and are declining. That is a bad loss. We’ve lost three games this year by a total of 5 points. I hated losing this one. It’s been a bad two week stretch for Flames athletics.

A 3 win Army attempted 1 pass today and didn’t complete that. Yet they dominated UConn 34-17. That makes our loss to UConn even harder to stomach.

RE: LIBERTY vs. VA. TECH
After the UConn loss last week, HC Freeze mentioned in his press conference how he would have called different plays when asked about his 4th down play attempt then that failed. Today was a repeat with a 4th and 12th play and LU going for it. To this point, I have given Freeze high praise for his leadership and coaching. Today's poor play calling, on another 4th down play was a major contributing factor in the loss.

The second questionable coaching decision was to pull JB, "to run a package that they had created for Salter". Why? JB had just led the team to a touchdown. And for the second week, Salter again fumbled. This shuffling of QBs was needed in the beginning and to the mid point of the season. But when JB beat BYU then Arkansas, Freeze should have been expressed more confidence and designated JB as the starter. Freeze was too impulsive and controlling with the "packages" inclusion and pulling JB.

LU is still at 8-3 with one game to go. Even a 8-4 season, at this juncture in LU's rise to predominance and recognition, is a success. But losing when you're the favored team, and winning games when the underdog is ass backwards. This seems like LU is learning to win. With success comes greater challenges to maintain and elevate the caliber of play and continue winning. 9-3 is very good for LU this year. And a lower level, pre Christmas bowl seems evitable.

Yes it does. I can’t stop asking myself, how does a team that almost beat a good Wake Forest team lose to a team like UCONN or how does a team handily beat Arkansas and lose to a bad 2 win Virginia Tech team? Is it lack of focus by the players or lack of preparation by the coaching staff? Or is it both or something else entirely?03-banghead
