RE: How Does EMU Match Up Against UofM and Can We Win?
The thing I love about this EMU team that we haven't had in a LONG time is our shooting. It is the great equalizer in Friday's game. I think we have shown that we can be a great shooting team. And we all know Noah and Emoni will be fearless against anyone.

The closer we get to the game the more I love our chances. Call it blind optimism if you want, but I think if nothing else we will have a good time!

RE: How Does EMU Match Up Against UofM and Can We Win?
Hard for me to predict a score - on one hand we will want to speed up the game but we can’t leak out Emoni, Geeter, Billingsley, and perhaps Acuff and maybe Noah too because the ENTIRE TEAM will need to rebound. UofM on the other hand have perhaps one of the better college rebounders who will get the ball quickly to the outlets and have many more fast breaks opportunities.

So does EMU slow it down and get the score in the 50s? Do I dare say we play a zone occasionally? Dickinson creates such a matchup problem, maybe a 3-2 zone occasionally that potentially throws a YOUNG UofM team off balance? Start with a man to man and switch up to zone several times. Plus we may want to test their young shooters by forcing them to make contested outside shots? By no means am I a proponent for a zone defense but UofM may be the ideal candidate to play this strategy- they have a big strong center and questionable outside shooters (except Jett Howard). I don’t believe Llewelyn nor Butkin are great outside shooters - they are however great finishers at the rim. I’m not saying we pack the paint and leave them open for the three ball, but EMU should be able to cheat with help in the paint providing they know where the shooter (Howard) is at all times. Don’t Leave Howard Open!!!

On offense, it’s going to be interesting to see if Stan has us running up and down the court to tire out Dickinson or run the shot clock for 20-25 seconds and make UofM play D while settling for a low scoring game.
Will Emoni be patient and play within the game? Will Emoni try to prove a point to UofM and shoot excessively even when a team mate might have a better shot. Does Emoni have the discipline and selflessness to stay in and rebound and not leak out for the crowd pleasing dunk? When I look at our starting 5, we will have two players better than UofM but this season is so young and a strategy switching from man to man and zone may be too early in the season to be effective for our very young team.

UofM will want to prove a point to Emoni that he’s overrated. Emoni and the rest of the EMU team will want to show EVERYONE we’re not intimidated by UofM. Emoni, Noah, Acuff, Billingsley and Geeter have all played against the best college athletes so they know they belong. The question will be how quickly can this young team develop a basketball IQ and make the right choices during the game that will determine the final score. If we lose, I won’t put any stock in the L unless it’s totally lopsided. Instead I will continue with my prediction that by the MAC tournament begins EMU will be battle tested and have a great chance to be a top 4 team in this conference.

Man I hope you are all correct with your optimism. I just don’t see it in this game. Dickinson is going to have a field day with our young, undersized front court. Our best chance to win is to somehow get him in foul trouble, with Noah and Emoni getting hot from 3. The latter is feasible, but I can’t see the former happening. I like this team a lot, and I think we will be fine, but I see a bloodbath tomorrow. Something like 81-57.

Will Emoni play? I mean I assume so, but we don't know the reason he didn't play the other night/how long he could be kept out for whatever decision.

The best way to guard Dickinson is to stay between him and the basket with arm up so he can't see the basket. Every time he's forced to take a jump shot is a win whether the ball goes in or not. For if you foul him while shooting he's going to shoot a far higher percentage at the foul-line. Plus he may have a three-point play.

The key is defending him is to force him to take a jump shot, and for the defender to be ready and not fall for a pump fake, give ground, so he doesn't go around and score on a lay-up.

Do that and Dickinson won't beat EMU. EMU should avoid going after him
offensively as he's 7'1", and he'll alter and and block EMU shots. He's not going to foul-out out against a non-conference opponent. Didn't last season and won't this season. Had 5 fouls in only one game last season.

Emoni needs to play within the game and not try to take over. Pro coaches are looking to see how smart he is. They know he's a good shooter. They don't want to see him taking shots from far out. They want to see him find space to shoot, rebound, get assists, make steals and nog foul excessively. They want to see his feet moving on defense.,

He should guard 8'8 Howard and either deny him the ball on the perimeter or be in his face when he has the ball and make him dribble. He can't let Howard take 10 three's as he did the first game. Stop Howard's three's and EMU will be in good position to win.

EMU has the shooters to beat Michigan if they find the open man. EmU should pressure the ball on the perimeter, and push the ball up Court, but not run and gun.

Should be a good game. EMU will not lack confidence.

Hopefully not another suspension for wearing a hat while on the bench last week. Didn't look professional at all.

Agree Miggy that we need to relentlessly deny Dickinson the ball. If Dickinson does catch the ball, make him catch it outside the paint. Hopefully Dickinson does not foul out our team trying to block his shot!

If Dickinson scores less then 20, and Bates and Farrakhan score 50, then we will win!
E Michigan 77 Michigan 74!
I think Emoni puts on a show, and scores 30 plus! No one on Michigan can guard him period! He's 6'9" with handles and hops! He's also playing to be 1st round draft pick! National TV exposure!

That sounds good but Emoni tried that at Memphis and it didn't produce wins. Don't want to see Emoni taking contested shots. Given his height, his shots near the three-point line won't be contested. He needs to pick his spots going to the hoop. Must know where Dickinson lurks.

EMU is far more than a one-man team.

Never should foul his jump shot. That bad defense. That the shot we want him to take. He'll make just 50 percent of them. Can live with that. Believe he's an 80 percent foul-shooter.

Good coaching should result in EMU's young big not fouling more than once every 15 minutes of playing time. Takes discipline and giving ground and not touching opponent who has the ball with hand or body.

As a coach I really dislike fouling. Believe it's rarely a good thing to do.

Have a story to share about fouling. A few seasons ago a team made the NCAA tournament. In the first round, a player on one of the teams, reminded his teammates every 5 minutes not to foul. The players listened and hardly committed any fouls.

The opposing team wound-up shooting 5-7 from the foul-line. Even though the other team slightly out-shot his team from the field, his team from the field, his team won the game by 6-points, as they scored 13-points from the foul-line, 8-more points than their opponent.

I think this is a bad line:

Line : MICH -21.0
O/U : 143.5

UofM giving 21 is too much. It won't be a blowout, by any means.

Michigan has a decisive height advantage with Dickinson and Reed playing the Center position. But that's it along the front-line.

EMU players can get to the hoop if Billingsley can draw Dickinson out to the three-point line. Also, EMU players will need to know where Dickinson
is before deciding to drive to the hoop.

Lovejoy said in the post game interview that the team would have Emoni back Friday. He isn’t the coach but it seems everyone knew it was a 1 game suspension.

He's playing as long as nothing happens btw now and then.
Hopefully not another suspension for wearing a hat while on the bench last week. Didn't look professional at all.
Stan said in the post-game interview that Emoni plays on Friday. The hat thing was a bad look though. Looking more like a college student than a rapper would help his image a bit.

good thing is he isnt a professional.

i dont care what he wears on his head if he can put up 30 and 10. cmon guys lets not be cranky.

Agreed. Also have you ever seen what players in the NBA wear on the bench when they are not dressed?? Not many suit and ties going on there.
