Good on Gruden’s agent to get this rumor out there and put pressure on Kelly. The fan base would love a Gruden hire.

I just don’t see the Academic Elite Administration at USF would hire someone controversial.

Gruden is certainly a good coach and if USF could give him the staff budget he would request, he could win there.

I'm just not so sure that the school's faculty would ever tolerate him being coach. In many ways, his hiring could backfire and put USF even further behind their peers.

Did Jeff Scott ever even get a chance to coach a practice in the new IPF?

Ouch.

Temple, with the disastrous Rod Carey as HC, was 2-1 vs USF during Scotts tenure.

Maybe USF should think about dropping down a level.

Didn't the AD just give Jeff Scott an extension? That has to be a pricey buy out while trying to raise funds for an OCS. Only way that move makes sense is if boosters threatened to pull facilities money if they don't axe him.

(To my fellow UCF Fans: None of the Bull fans are going to take the bait. They are just waiting for us, Knight fans, to go to the Big 12 boards this July.)

After a quick google search. Yes, Jeff Scott signed an extension January 25th, 2022.

USF Coaches took a pay cut as pandemic budget adjustment. So the extensions were essentially to make the USF coaches whole again with more time added to the end of their deals.

https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bulls/20...18-record/

I don't know what the finances look like for USF but its probably better than most think. I'll say one thing about Michael Kelly, he's smart and has done well considering his circumstances. Kelly was very conservative with his pandemic budget. Based on the Twitter rumors and Tampa Bay Times allusions, it seems his forecasting for the AAC budget going forward was conservative too. AAC didn't take a major hit with the ESPN deal. AAC secured a fair early exit fee from departing programs. That means Kelly's budget might be better than anticipated.

It sounds like Kelly is opting to hire the coach himself without a Search Firm. That's in line with the financially prudent Kelly.

Right now, based on Twitter, USF fans a very divided. I don't know if there is a candidate out there that will check all the boxes. Kelly really liked Scott. I expect another Boy Scout with a sterling reputation. USF has always prioritized academics as their predominant culture. This era of USF reminds me a lot of a G5 version of Miami under Randy Shannon and Al Golden without the Nevin Shapiro types lurking in the background.

I, personally, think Randy Shannon is a good fit for USF. He's been a bit of a journeyman in the state but he's by far the most experienced coach in the state. He'll be able to recruit with best of them. Most High School coaches have attended coaching clinics from Shannon for decades now. I don't think I've met a high school coach down here that doesn't have a personal relationship with Shannon. FSU's Defense is Top25 again since he was named DC. His Miami HC record was a long time ago with an administration that wasn't supporting the football team like it does under Cristobal. He was also a young HC when he was with Miami and he's a lot more experienced now. That's just my 2 cents as an outside observer.

RE: Jeff Scott has been fired
Hiring Jon Gruden would make the Jeff Scott era look good. He'd end up with about the same results plus probation. The guy hates rookies (not going to coach up the younger players), and he's a petulant man-child who will totally handle NIL, transfer portal, and such quite well.

If USF is serious about building a quality program, they'd give serious consideration to Pete Shinnick at West Florida. He's started two D-2 programs and did well at both. At UWF, he won a national championship in Year 4 after starting the program. In the second year, he went to the national title game. He's got them playing well again this year. But I'd imagine the USF fans/boosters and the Tampa press would have a meltdown hiring a D-2 guy instead of another flashy coordinator to win the press conference, so it won't happen.

I really hope they get somebody good. You have that double edged sword of a splashy hire that if they do pan out will bolt in a few years (ala Frost/Heupel) or gamble on a retread/proven guy that can give you stability but not maybe the 1 or 2 loss seasons.

Colorado could pay more im sure but that’s also more likely to be a career killer of a job. Success more likely at USF.
