RE: Mountain West question for UTEP, NMSU posters
IMHO: SDSU is trying to "cover" themselves at this point. They probably will give official notice at some time soon--but may miss the deadline. Thus the request for an extension. The Mountain West has ZERO reasons to approve any such agreement (would lose large $$).

This extension request is a little "ammunition" they can use later in court proceedings when trying to negotiate down the Exit fee. Lawyers will lawyer.

SDSU NOT going to b12. PAC for sure.

RE: Mountain West question for UTEP, NMSU posters
I think the MW will Stand Pat. Ten Basketball and Eleven Football.

There is no school they can add that has the same appeal as SDSU.

I also think it is very likely the PAC loses nobody else---for now (2-5yrs?).***

This will cause the MW to be stable--- for now--same time period.

UNLESS YORMARK goes crazy and (rejected by PAC teams) decides to add G5 schools from the MW and/or AAC. However, media partners have said they will pay only a partial share to any NON-P5 adds. Plus he may wait--thinking the BIG12 can add some PAC schools at a later date--if/when the PAC crumbles further.

All this makes me see the UTEP vs Texas St. debate as NOT mattering either way for YEARS to come. But--- I do Not think the AAC adds the Bobcats--- MW maybe...someday.

*** Of course if the PAC media deal comes out FAR under estimates at low money 04-deal >>>ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!

I think the PAC is playing this all wrong. They are playing the waiting game and I think it bites them in the long run. If I were them I’d add SDSU and Boise right now. I would also inform Fresno and UNLV they are on the radar if someone leaves. They are going to get caught napping and be in the same situation CUSA 3.0 fell into.

I agree, but they ought to go ahead and invite them all right now.

If invited, UTEP, NMSU and or TX ST take the bid. Being associated with Air Force alone make the move a good one. If more leave MWC the move may not be as attractive. For CUSA sakes I just hope if UTEP or NMSU are invited both get the same letter or call.

Stanford, Cal, Washington, and Colorado would definitely not go for Boise State or Fresno State, simply because of the academic elitism attitude those Pac-12 schools have.

Athletically, it'd make a ton of sense and would make the Pac-12 relevant again... but they'd never do it.

RE: Mountain West question for UTEP, NMSU posters
Let the record show that the Big XII is not inviting San Diego State unless to balance out a schedule with multiple Pac refugees. The new ESPN/Fox media contract only increases to accomodate expansion to current P5 members. So adding SDSU, Boise or Memphis will actually cost current members dollars. I don't see that going over well considering the assets we are describing. Getting into SoCal is attractive only if it part of a movement with teams from mountain & pacfic time zones.

The Pac-12 would only consider Fresno or Boise if there is a massive exit of existing members. That's not entirely out of the discussion.

The most likely scenario remains if the Pac-12 decides to stick together then SDSU & SMU get added at a reduced rate. If multiple members (between 2-8) decide the new media deal is not up to standards and bolt for the Big XII, then it becomes crazy time.

I don't see significant impact on current CUSA 3.0 members under any of these scenarios. UTEP .. NM State .. La Tech? Perhaps. Non seem significantly likely at this stage.

None of the PAC schools would. Being academic snobs is much more important than football, even though it’s now going to cost them big time. Remaining 10 + Boise/SDSU could save that conference, but they’d rather look elsewhere.

Seems like SMU might be number 12, but that also contradicts PAC preferences (a religious, culturally southern school playing in Seattle and Berkeley?).

Regardless, if PAC grabs one more, we’ll be on raid watch here once again.

RE: Mountain West question for UTEP, NMSU posters
After reading several articles about SDSU and them leaving the MWC, here’s my thoughts. It seems that SDSU wants to have their cake and eat it too. They send a letter to the MWC and basically say, we’re leaving but not right at this moment. How about being nice guys and give us an extension so we don’t have to pay double when we do exit. How about giving up 17 million and let us keep that since we won’t be gone by July 1. We don’t officially have anywhere to go at the moment, but when we do, we’re out of here. The MWC says, okay your membership will be voided. SDSU says, No wait, we didn’t mean we want out now. At the moment, I don’t think SDSU is going anywhere. Things could change quickly, but where would they go? They have no official invite right now. The PAC 12 will probably wait until they have a media deal in place before they do anything. I’m probably wrong, but I think the Big 12’s supposed interest is being used to move the 4 corner schools along. Did SDSU overplay their hand?

LOL @ anyone thinking SDSU just did this WITHOUT an invite to a P5 conference. It’s curtains when PAC media deal is ready to go.

If SDSU had a legitimate invite, there’s no way they backtrack and beg the MWC to disregard their first letter. If SDSU is 100% going to a P5, there’s no way that news isn’t already leaked.

RE: Mountain West question for UTEP, NMSU posters
SDSU has nothing in hand. Just sweet nothings that have been whispered in their ears pending a series of events that fall nicely into place. They have basically admitted as much the past 48 hours.

Is it possible that they could land back in the MWC when no P5 offers come through? Absolutely. They did it once before when their ill-fated move to the Big East fell apart a decade ago.

As for SMU, there is very little religious about the school in Dallas. They still have a divinity school but otherwise they are non-sectarian. The M in their name is no longer of significance. It is primarily a rich kids frat-tastic party for four years by reputation. It is just a considerably smaller institution than most Pac-12 schools just like Rice in that regard. Let the record show that Rice is not frat-tastic like the Dallas school.

Respectfully Disagree. If the PAC grabs only One--just one-- from the MW (probably SDSU)--- then the Mountain West stands pat.

Eleven for FB. Ten for BB.

If they lose multiple teams-- "Katy, bar the door."

Why would they leave the MWC if they’re basically assured of nothing? Protection from the increased fees *just in case* they get an invite? Doesn’t seem like the smartest move if they have “nothing in hand”.

Agree with you there, when/if SDSU leaves the MWC will simply stand pat.

My “concern” would be with the AAC. If SMU leaves, could they take make a CUSA school the replacement? I think that’s the only possible way this realignment directly impacts CUSA.

Edit: my word use in OP was poor, “one more” was in reference to any expansion beyond SDSU.

IMO IF the AAC loses one--they WILL replace--BUT may wait a year or two to do so--hoping they can hit a "home run" by somehow grabbing a MW team(s) (AF, Col. St.) and/or ARMY. They might even consider going to 16 teams with the right combination of MW/Service academies. The AAC tried VERY, very hard to get those two (AF, Col. St.) the last time. If the MW weakens further--those two may reconsider. If all those efforts fail they would move on to an SBC or C-USA candidate.

Spot on post regarding the AAC. Army, AFA plus Navy all together would be solid for that conference. Add Colorado State to keep AFA happy would give the AAC a huge leg up on the MWC, imho.
