RE: 2023 Baseball Schedules
On behalf of the JMU fans and community, I want to apologize in advance for ruining the conference's RPI. I (like many JMU fans) was hoping that the move to a new conference, fan apathy, and a lack of consistent success would lead to a coaching change, but for some reason we brought back a coach that has a sub-.500 record at JMU (six games under overall and 14 games under in the old conference). Our loss is your gain I suppose.

At least SBC baseball is good enough to kick the **** out of us and leave us no excuse to keep him.

Hope springs eternal.

With any luck, and a successful coaching search/change made after this season, 03-banghead JMU will begin to see its baseball fortunes improve starting in the Spring of 2024.

Until then, 03-phew

Just hope we don’t screw the SBC’s rpi too much.

Who will be last in releasing their schedule? Troy, JMU, Marshall, Arkansas State, or Georgia State?

Man, that conference schedule for CCU is absolutely BRUTAL. Gotta be the toughest conference slate in the league.

I was waiting on Troy, JMU, Georgia State, Marshall, and Arkansas State to release their schedule to see the average RPI of each team's opponents using last year's RPI. I know that doesn't mean the RPI will be the same this year, but it gives us some way of measuring OOC schedules. Coastal actually has the second toughest schedule using this metric (although they also have a lot of home games like usual). I was particularly interested in Old Dominion after their weak schedule hurt them last year. Here are the results so far:

64.96 - Georgia Southern
66.96 - Coastal Carolina
83.71 - Southern Miss
107.65 - Texas State
130.83 - South Alabama
138.81 - Louisiana
142.45 - App State*
158.08 - Old Dominion
177.35 - ULM

*App State has 4 games against Queens that appears to be transitioning to D1, so they had no official RPI last year to factor into this calculation.

Same thing different season. We pretty much need to run the table OOC. At the very least win every series. Probably can only afford to drop a few conference series and that's against the top teams. Then still probably have to get to the championship game. Lol

In spite of the bad RPI of our opponents, we ended up with an overall RPI of 20 and OOC RPI of 65.

USM 22 & 26

Baseball season is going to be a blast.

I’m still mad about how bad they screwed you guys. ODU played in Hattiesburg so much last year you became our second favorite team. The HR horn salute for beating Tech was unprecedented.

Last year our non-conference SOS was 200 and we had an RPI of 46. A non-conference SOS of 158 would have improved our odds at an at-large since we would likely have a better RPI.

ODU did a good job adding non-conference series with Liberty and Charlotte and not really losing anything else. Additional improvements to the non-conference slate should happen in 2024 with the new stadium opening and being able to attract better opponents in Norfolk.

Southern Miss has now sold over 2,750 baseball season tickets for the 2023 season. Many people expect that number to eclipse 3,000 before the season starts.

A good number of holes to fill for GS, but still plenty of important pieces returning. If we strike gold on a few new pitchers, I think the team will be able to outslug a lot of people.

That’s fantastic!

JMU can’t even average 500 at its games, and admission is free. 03-weeping

JMU's baseball games are free? I honestly didn't know D1 programs did that.

Our schedule has been done for months. But we never release anything until after Christmas.

Yes they are. Started a few years ago. Nobody was attending (in any real numbers anyway), so the AD said f__it, let’s make entrance free. It didn’t help. If anything, fewer people came to the games.

Bottom line, that’s what we’ve been trying to tell our SBC brethren…JMU’s baseball program is D1 in name only. The facilities are “okay”…nothing to really complain about in that regard, other than it looks like a DIi or NAIA ballpark. The problem is coaching…and vision.

Gotcha.

I'm sure baseball is a bigger deal in the SBC than in CAA. I think JMU will want to invest more down the line.
