RE: MLive--Declining enrollment has WMU on budgetary tightrope
"And thanks to a declining birthrate and a shrinking percentage of new high school graduates enrolling in college, that downward enrollment trend is likely to continue indefinitely."
It's time to start thinking about which universities should be shuttered. Once you build up all that infrastructure for a certain level of students, it becomes an expensive problem to have it sitting around unused. It's going to require some creative solutions about selling or renting buildings. Smart colleges should be focused on long-term retaining plans for the programs they have rather than trying to aggressively expand. And it should focus on making their unique programs more resilient. What are those for WMU? Aviation? Medieval studies? Dalton's music programs?
WMU will have to outrun EMU, CMU, and GVSU here.
