I didn't get a chance to watch this earlier so I'm watching the replay. I can't believe that got overturned. I've seen it all year though; most recently in the TN/GA game today. I've never been a fan of this rule except when it's flagrant using your helmet to Jack Tatum people. But, that was textbook as is written.

RE: Game Thread: South Alabama @ Georgia Southern - 3:00 PM CT - ESPN+
Thinking about this game today... Things did not go well for the Jags to start. With 3:24 left in the first quarter, Georgia Southern was up 21-7. Georgia Southern’s points came on the heels of a pick-6 on the second play of the game and two quick drives thereafter. For the remaining 48:24 of the game the Jags held the Eagles to 10 points while scoring 31. That’s amazing considering the Jags had 3 turnovers, 13 penalties for 118 yards, and had 31 players battling the flu this week (including 17 starters). Yam Banks, that had the Vantrease interception in the end zone following our muffed punt, only flew in Saturday morning. LaDamian Webb also battled the flu this week and ran for 247 yards on 35 carries. I was worried about this game but after the first quarter the Jags took over and pulled it out. Who would have thought that in the Jag’s first win in Statesboro they’d go to the ground and just run GS to death?

Poor game management led to much of USA's success down the stretch. GS had a comfortable lead with possession to start the 3rd. Rather than put the game away GS chose to play loose and limit the long play and assumed the O could maintain enough of the spread based on the first half performance to pull out a W. Relying more on stout red zone defense. Instead USA was gifted points in rapid succession turning the tide with 5 minutes left. With three top receivers out the five minute drive to win didn't happen.

I thought it. South dominated the LOS on both sides of the ball and GS offense couldn't hold the advantage of the early breaks. Looks like the formula of being a Transfer U is working for Coastal (39) and South (42). Maybe the success will help recruit players who actually want to go to Conway and Mobile out of HS. I'm OK right now with this first year GS team being competitive.

There’s no place for it. Our player deserved to get ejected. I’m sure the coaches will have words with him this week.

I don't know, it seems like USA's players have been extra chippy with us the last few years. There was a LOT of trash being talked in pregame warmups in 2020.

Maybe having not beaten us before last year has contributed to a bit of that animosity.

Not saying the team is dirty or anything (although 55 is forever trash for what he did), but it's been a bit extra in the last few seasons.

Coach Wommack just wants a physical team. But they can be physical without all the penalties and obviously spitting has no place in the sport. I hope the coaches punish him.

A lot to be desired on defense but I’ve said from the time Helton was announced that if Southern can get to a bowl game (and win it) in year one then this Eagle will be content until next season.

In checking the ESPN FPI stats for defense efficiency this morning, I now see GS is ranked #127 out of 131. In terms of yards allowed per game, this season's defense is literally the worst of all time in school history, and it's not even close. This isn't just "missing a few players on defense" as per the standard GS fan rhetoric, this is evidence that the DC is missing more than a few key pieces of understanding on what a good defense is. Until Helton fixes that, this is nothing but a repeat of the Hatcher years, i.e 6-6, 7-5 seasons depending on which side of the W/L we fall on when the clock runs out. I'll welcome GS rebuttals on this, but just know you don't have a statistical leg to stand on in doing so.

We hired a Pac-12 defensive assistant to bring that scheme to the SBC. In general terms, they don't play ball out there like we do in the SBC. There's quite a few of power/heavy run teams in this conference that will chew up a scheme like that. Several of us have shown some concern since the hire was made that it may not be a good fit. We're lacking players for sure, but I'm still not convinced it's quite the right fit for this conference.

It also doesn't help that the DL and LB coaches were essentially GAs prior to joining our staff. We are experience light on that side of the ball and I believe it's showing a good bit.

Yes, it is showing a good bit for sure. If we had the average defense of our in conference opponents, we'd have just 1 loss right now and be a top team in the SBC. I don't deny we are lacking players. I'd love to be stacked with Canteens and the like. If we could crank out the kind of turnaround on defense that we've had on offense this season, this would be a very memorable season. At the beginning of the season, I had doubts we had the players to make this offense be as ridiculously productive as they are. Surely we can do that on defense? Definitely whets the appetite, and hopefully Helton will make changes on defense in one way or another to make that happen.

Technically, you still need a win &/or a GAST loss, this week to clinch the East.

Bc GAST is a game behind, and you have the tie-breaker; so beat USM this week and then it's officially clinched.

I mean like I said, I didn't call the team dirty or anything, I've just noticed an increase of hostility/chippiness in the last few games it seemed like.

Also 55 is trash forever. Suspended or not. A man doesn't spit on someone.

I think most, if not all, of South's fans agree with you. If the coaching staff cannot "rehab" him he should transfer again even tho he is arguably our best OL. There is no place for this behavior.

When that App. State player spat upon one of our players last year I was disgusted and upset about it and I feel no different about our player spitting on the Georgia Southern player, except that it is downright disappointing.
